Inside track: Modi’s China slant | The Indian Express

Narendra Modi has not spoken on foreign policy, but those who know the Gujarat Chief Minister well believe there is bound to be a shift in India’s position on international relations were he to come to power. Speculation is that Modi would be less pro-US than the present regime and more well-disposed towards China. The policy would reflect the two countries’ attitude towards Modi personally in the past few years.

The US State Department, under pressure from individual Congressmen, has for long treated Modi as an untouchable. It was announced twice that he was being denied a visa, the second time when he had not even applied for one. The US Ambassador to India, Nancy Powell, met Modi for the first time only in February this year. In contrast, China has gone out of the way to be friendly. Modi has made trips to China, accompanied by delegations of Gujarati businessmen, and received a red carpet welcome. The Chinese have built a power station in the state. China is also in contention for setting up an SEZ in Gujarat.

Sounds like this will be good for business.

I guess Indians are fed up of Congress super-socialist schemes, now they are ready to make some money with Modi!

Even though Modi is anti-Muslim he also seems pro-Asia and is likely to be more accommodating to the biggest Asian power China than Congress.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the Indian economy if he gets into power.

Its better to be communal and grow at 9% rather than being sickular and grow at 5%
At least with Modi 83% of Population will Benefit
As against the congress where only bottom 33% reaps all the benefits
and the middle class and rich suffer

Actually the bottom 33% also suffer over the long term due to poorer employment opportunities and better social services and infrastructure that a richer country could provide.

I do not think that India will grow at sustained 9% and 7-8% is more likely but if Modi gets into power then all will be revealed.

Only Modi won't decide the complete foreign policy for India.

It is the party which he belongs to. It is a well known fact that BJP is more Pro-US & Israel than Congress.

Yes, Modi would prefer doing business with China but not at the cost of US.

There is no question of either-or in deciding foreign policy.

Yes,

But there is an opening for China to improve relationship.Unlike Pakistan, i don't think Chinese consider India as mortal enemy.

Yes, we need better relations with China as well as ASEAN.

With USA, we need to remain pragmatic. They are not reliable friends and that has always been clear.

chinese consider japan and usa as their enemy.even they know india is too benign.

plus they did not do anything during kargil where we were completely unprepared so now its totally impossible.

on the contrary if a border aggrement is signed india and china both will give sleepless nights to west.

brics will be more powerful too.

its high time we tap chinese market and learn a thing or two from them.

US should promote trade protectionalism and see how long both India and China with over 2.3 billions population survive without the benefit of US investment.

The only country in this world that thinks of ECONOMICS, BUSINESS, PROSPERITY is China. For China Arunachal isn't a bigger issue than surpassing US in terms of GDP. I think Modi will give them what they want so that the issue of LAC could be put on back burner. It is predicted that by 2030, it would be China & India who will be the largest trading partners in the world. So why speak about thorny issues. For Modi, it will be the mantra of "Trade, Trade & more trade" when it comes to China.

Both India and China posters in here all jump for joy to ally with Russia but both nations completely dependent on the West for their economy grow.

This is a GLOBALIZED world sir, EVERY country is dependent on EVERY other country.

With Congress only 5% prosper. The creamy layer + the seculars(Owaisis, Khurshids, Pawar etc), the elite clique(Aiyar, Tharoor, Sibal, Chidu) and the Italians
