Last week, a suicide bomber killed 40 Indian soldiers in Kashmir. An armed group based in Pakistan, Jesh-e-Mohammed (JeM), has claimed responsibility for the worst such attack in more than 70 years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in New Delhi has accused the Pakistani government of backing the group and many Indian news outlets, have gone further, calling for a crackdown on so-called "anti-nationals" at home, who they describe as "terrorist sympathisers".

"Every time an incident like this happens, before the government can respond, before the army can respond, before the military responds, the media immediately jumps the gun, asking for war,"
points out documentary filmmaker Sanjay Kak.

There is no denying where the demand for justice comes from or the news value of the story because, for the Indian media, this story ticks so many boxes: Kashmir, Pakistan and the army. The attack came just as campaigning begins for a national election that is just months away, something the Hindi right and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) capitalising on.

"What they've basically done is they've very quickly kind of mobilised their forces to essentially see if they can actually shape this, and hammer it into kind of their classic narrative of Hindus versus Muslims. The Muslim as the figure of the outsider, the Congress is a weak party, liberals as you know 'anti-national traitors' and so on,"
according to Rohit Chopra, associate professor at Santa Clara University.

What makes Indian news channels unique is that there are so many of them, far more than any other country. And as political debate in India has grown more polarised, often over Prime Minister Modi's brand of Hindu nationalism, TV output has become more debased. And when that kind of coverage is fed into the Indian social media messaging machine, the effect can be dangerous.

"It's interesting how social media and television - at least some news channels - have actually been hand in hand when it comes to setting the narrative for the current mood," says journalist Kunal Purohit.

WAR IS NOT A JOKE
media must refrain from fanning the war hysteria
Modi wanted the election win at the cost of the lives of Indians and Pakistanis after minor election setbacks in few indian states
I am sorry I cant see it any other way
now the men from both sides will pay with their blood for this feud.

just case in point. do consider why Kashmiris want Indian occupation forces out?
its beyond Pakistani help or any militant group. the people of Kashmir hate the Indian occupation
blaming Pakistan wont work no more

the cause of all the conflict

If you are following their TV channels right now, they have lost their mind and are inciting their people for war.
We can't imagine the effects of any kind of large scale war that could escalate into nuclear confrontation even if used in limited perspective.
On the other hand, they have successfully suppressed the Kashmir Issue by launching this preemptive strike drama and diverged their public from the atrocities they are doing in Kashmir.

De-escalation will happen over the next few days back to the usual stand-off.

Richard Holbrooke

who convinced both countries (mainly India) before to restrain from full out war in mid 2000s

It might take a little longer this time around since the joker in chief is in Vietnam and the Congress hearings, but it will happen, please rest assured.

fck democracy at international stage
it helps to have a super power that has economical, social and military strength to convince other countries to comply

Please do read Sec Pompeo's statement to get an idea of how this might evolve.

Not just Indian media, from reading both sides it is almost a cut and paste job just swap India and Pakistan in the articles.
Both sides know the other side started it,
Both know they are being reasonable despite outrageous provocation from the other,
Both sides know they wont start the war but when it happens they know they will win.

Sadly both sides are going to pay a horrible price for being right.
