India's Mars Mission among top five most tracked satellites | Business Standard

India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is one of the most tracked satellites in the World, according to N2YO, which provides web-based realtime satellite mapping tools.

According to the website, MOM, which was launched on November 5 by India, was the fourth most tracked sattelite globally. It is also interesting to note, two more Indian satellites are on the top 50 list.

According to the mapping, as on Saturday afternoon at 1.50 pm the spacecraft was somewhere flying over Oman.

Early morning today MOM crossed one more milestone by successfully completing its third orbit raising manouever.

The website LIVE REAL TIME SATELLITE TRACKING AND PREDICTIONS listed out top 50 most tracked satellites based on user activity for past 12 hours.

The most tracked satellite was GOSAT (IBUKI), which was launched by Japan in 2009. The Ibuki (GOSAT) satellite is equipped with a greenhouse gas observation sensor (TANSO-FTS) and a cloud/aerosol sensor (TANSO-CAI) that supplements TANSO-FTS.

This was followed by European Space Agency's (ESA') GOCE, launched in 2009, a slender, winged ion-driven satellite launched to glide through the upper atmosphere for nearly two years measuring Earth's gravity field with unprecedented precision. GOCE data will also provide a new understanding of tectonic activity that could lead to better forecasts of earthquakes and volcanoes.

The third most tracked satellite was ISS (ZARYA), launched in 1998 by International Space Station, consist of US, Russian Federation, Japan, Canada and Europe.

The other two Indian satellites, which managed to get in top lists include GSAT 7, which is 11th most tracked satellites. The satellite, also known as INSAT 4F, was the 17th Indian satellite launched by Arianespace in August 2013. It relays communications between Indian naval vessels and military commanders using UHF, S-band, C-band and Ku-band transponders. Positioned over the equator at 74 degrees longitude, GSAT 7 will cover the Indian subcontinent and neighboring waters.

Then INSAT 3D is an Indian meteorological satellite, launched in July 2013. This satellite is on the 46th position among the top 50 most tracked satellites in the World.
