The United States Homeland Security department may soon be using a technology developed by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to detect explosives, after it was proved to be a major success in insurgency from Pakistan and militancy affected areas in India.

The DRDO has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with US-based company Crowe and Company LLC to further develop the Explosive Detection Kit (EDK) to meet the standards set by regulatory institutions in America. After modifying or further developing the EDK, it will be deployed in the U.S. Army and Homeland Security forces and other international markets.

The EDK is developed by DRDO's Pune-based High Energy Material Research Lab (HEMRL). High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) is a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Located in Pune, its main function is the research and development of technologies and products in the area of High Energy Materials and Explosive materials. HEMRL is organized under the Armaments Directorate of DRDO.

HEMRL has a core strength of 1200 personnel, comprising chemists, physicists, mathematicians, chemical, mechanical and electronic engineers. It is recognised as a postgraduate centre for basic and applied research and is an ISO-9001:2000 certified laboratory.

The EDK can detect explosives of any combination based on TNT, dynamite or black powder. Even a 3 to 5 mg of suspected sample can be detected. The EDK comes packed in a box as small as a vanity case and in miniature vials that can be kept in shirt pockets. It contains reagents capable of detecting explosives, even in extremely small quantities.

The DRDO has stated that the technology is very effective and is already in use by the Indian security forces and would now help the international community also.

The EDK is being widely used by the Bomb Detection Squads (BDS) of the Indian Army, paramilitary and police in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

WOW now somebody can sell USA defence equipments .......................

.
and how does it work? Sounds interesting.

. .
It was posted early along with the Aerostat tech which was also caught in the eyes of US

.
Don't get too excited.....I am happy to see INdia exporting to US but look at the facts why. This tech has been around since Chemistry labs have been in existence. Using reagents to confirm certain chemicals is Chemistry 101. The reason why the US doesn;t have such tech is probably due to the defense companies making a killing by making some extremely expensive product that gets the same job done. The bottom line is that the US defense companies were probably making a killing and avoided such products. Now, you have a tie up with a small American firm who will bid for such contracts and win because cost is lower and the tech is very effective to complete the job. At least India was able to use its tech and make a buck......good going INdia

How may times should people post this over and over again? And it is NOT a big deal. This technology is decades old.

kewl stuff, i think we should have more JVs with the US Israel and Russia in systems such as these, they'll help eliminate the insurgency.
