Indian truck makers face the heat from Chinese brands in Sri Lanka

What's the incident regarding Pakistan Railways? We have both Chinese and Indian trains, we have some issues with Indian trains but not with Chinese trains yet.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 2001, Dong Fang supplied 69 substandard locomotives to Pakistan Railways in a sale that was viewed as a disaster for the country's railways system, with the machines' weight proving excessive for the existing rail network, and cracks in engines and consistent maintenance requirements proving a heavy burden for the buyer.

Chinese locomotives are not used elsewhere in the world due to their inefficient energy consumption and high maintenance costs and critics claim corruption in Pakistan Railways led to the latest contract for 75 locomotives. Last year, Pakistan had refused to finalize the locomotive deal. Analysts say the engines will be cheaper only at the time of purchase, but their lifetime cost will be much higher than those of international quality

Chinese-made locos a disaster - Labour

KiwiRail could end up like Malaysian Railways with its new Chinese-made locomotives mothballed because faults can't be fixed, Labour says.

The party revealed on Monday that production of the second batch of locomotives ordered by KiwiRail was on hold as the manufacturer tries to sort out faults in those already delivered.

It has documents which list 20 problems experienced since the locomotives started coming into service over the last two years.

MP Clare Curran is now saying the procurement programme is a disaster.

"They were so keen to buy cheap locos they didn't consider what would happen if they were duds," she said.

"The Chinese locomotives had already proven faulty - 15 of 20 of the same class purchased by Malaysian Railways in 2005 were mothballed three years later due to severe technical problems."

Labour is blaming the Government, saying KiwiRail is under-resourced and was forced to accept the lowest tender for the locomotives.

KiwiRail chief executive Jim Quinn says problems with the locomotives are part of the commissioning process and repairs will be completed by next month.

"Every locomotive we've had over the years has had commissioning issues," he said.

in fact Chinese Truck/Bus manufacturers are venturing into India too. the brand AMW imports it's cabin and few parts from China.
then Foton is planning to launch their trucks here. unlike Cars, Chinese trucks are not that bad?
though, I know the fiasco of what happened to China Buses(Kinglong make with quality issues) in Bombay .

Srilanka is having a healthy & growing economy. So they should start improving the infrastructure in Railway Stations.

Actually initial cost should not be the only criterion for long-term purchase decisions, performance, quality & maintanance cost should be given due consideration. Locos & trucks are not mobile phones that you change in 1-2 years.

Government still haven't touched any railway station yet. Our transport minister own a private bus company so he may lazy to improve standards of our railway.

The Chinese truck makers gained market because they are cheap and are offered on soft loans. Everyone knows what happens to cheap goods.

They cannot compete on an even keel, their state induced subsidy is whats driving their products.

So far Chinese automobile industry remained a failure in India. There was a malor push in the two-wheeler segment, but that also failed. Quality remained a major issue with Chinese products.

I hope their defence industry has the same level of quality control. :D

I doubt about level playing field.

India concern over Sri Lanka’s tax raise for vehicle imports

May be some Sri Lankan member can clarify.

Well Indian exports mainly consists of two and three wheel and commercial heavy vehicle segments.. Passenger transport cars,SUV's etc are completely dominated by Japanese, Korean and European imports(Direct imports not Indian manufactured) except for small cars segment where Maruti and TATA have increased their share

Not sure about the figures though but I still think Lanka Ashok Leyland and Volvo(Sweden) still holds sway in the heavy vehicle(Trucks) market
