Indian support helped weaken LTTE: Sri Lanka

Colombo, Jan 15 : Sri Lanka's navy has praised India for its help in countering the LTTE, and said the militant group's "backbone has been broken" after the destruction of several rebel vessels.

"Co-operation with India has been extremely successful in countering the LTTE. Every year, the Indian navy with the Indian Coast Guard and the Sri Lankan navy holds four bilateral discussions. We are conducting coordinated patrols with the Indian navy as well," Navy Chief Wasantha Karannagoda said.

"We have broken their backbone by destroying their supply vessels and floating warehouses, several war-like materials which would have allowed the tigers to sustain this conflict," Karannagoda told the media.

The Navy Chief asserted that the LTTE was not strong enough to sustain its fight against the government for long and that the outfit's naval power was badly weakened after several losses.

"The navy has destroyed almost all LTTE vessels that could have assisted the tigers in attacking the armed forces," he said adding "within one year we have destroyed eight floating warehouses, which had carried more than 10,000 tons of war-like material".

This included artillery, mortar, dismantled parts of three aircraft, bullet proof vehicles, underwater delivery vehicles, scuba diving sets and radar, among other things, he said.

On its part, the Sri Lankan Navy has acquired new ships and boats and is also building indigenous vessels to counter the LTTE threat, Karannagoda said.

Earlier, the LTTE warehouses were stationed off the Island's coast and whenever the need arose they came up to about 300 kms from land and transferred the arms cargo on to trawlers which brings them ashore, the Navy Chief said.

He said the navy had successfully put an end to this type of arms smuggling, severely weakening the LTTE.

Good post Malay!!

This should help establish the fact that Sri Lanka and India have excellent diplomatic relations, in spite of some limited Tamil sympathy for the LTTE.

Honestly I have no problem with Indian-Sri Lankan relationships, this is the internal matter of India ans Sri Lanka, but why is it that when Pakistan tries to sell Sri Lanka weapons India strongly opposes it? And please dont take this in a negative way, I mean no harm in this statement, I just want the answer to my question.

Because India is the biggest player in the region and does not want any one else undercutting their area.Plain enough for you?

You see this superior mentality is why a lot of South Asian countries have a problem with India. It is true that India is superior when it cames to economy and population, but still when considering diplomatic relations, everyone is treated as equal. The point which I was trying to make is why must India meddle in the business of other nations. India should stop being the bigger brother and leave the internal matter of other countries alone.

I think it depends on the diplomatic relations of that country with India.

I don't remember India protesting against Bhutan, Nepal or Sri Lanka.

Its only aggressive against hostile nations, which in this case is Pakistan.

Also, I think Pakistan does have a big problem with India-Srilankan relations, or for that matter India-anyone relations. Its just doesn't have enough influence to counter their foreign policies.

Well who is the agressor and who isn't depends on your point of view. This in it selfis a different topic and I dont want to get into it right now. You have your beliefs on this issue and I have mine.
Now you said Pakistan has a problem with India-Sri Lanka relationships. I doubt this is very true. We could care less about Sri Lanka. Recently China-India relationship is growing and if dont have a problem with this then what makes you think Sri Lanka will give us a problem. Now as far as influence is concerned what happened to India's influence in Russia. Russia has agreed to sell the engines for the JF-17 Thunder. The fact is in some places India has influence and in some Pakistan.

This is absolutley false, since every country in south asia is being suffering from domestic political crisis as well as Rampant Terrorism and associted viloence and India is no exception to it. It is absolutely unwise to view India as guilty for the dilemma of all other southasian country.

It is true that India is superior when it cames to economy and population, but still when considering diplomatic relations, everyone is treated as equal. The point which I was trying to make is why must India meddle in the business of other nations.

It is indecent to held India at fault for interfering the internal matters of other countries, since as far as Pakistan is concerned, it is India's long standing arch-rivel and both this rivel have had associated with conflict in the past. And hence as part of India's Foriegn Policy it becomes impertive for India to create hurdle in the path of pakistan when it is nearing other south asian countries in terms of weapon supply. Afterall it is one of the critical segament of Diplomacy.

Even Pakistan do create hurdles when India choose to have positive relationship with other nations.

India should stop being the bigger brother and leave the internal matter of other countries alone.

India is not acting as big brother just on the premise it has bigger economy and population, India is simply exerting its influence to achieve its amibition of superpower status. If Pakistan wants to minimize its influence, then they have to fight back in terms of Economic development and develop the skill of establishing positive diplomatic relationship with all other nation.
