Indian Railways achieves 100% punctuality for first time in history, 201 trains on time

 ..................... .........................

In 1950 the total length of Indian rail network was 53,596 KM.

In 2012 it was 64,600 KM.

Then Modi came

In 2020 it is 1,23,236 kM.

The next line told me that India railway running on a restricted capacity with all regular passenger trains cancelled.

Which means if all regular passenger trains are running, there will be huge delay again as usual. To be honest, I will feel ashamed 201 trains are on time which are only 1.5% of total train running on the grid.

IR runs 13,523 passenger trains daily, on both long-distance and suburban routes, covering 7,321 stations across India.

.
Were passenger trains operating in July of last year ?

The 100 per cent punctuality on July 1 has been achieved when the network is running just 230 passenger trains – along with about 3,000 loaded freight trains and 2,200 empty ones.

Couldn't care any less what you think. You have already been exposed as a fool.

Explained: What did it take for Indian Railways to achieve 100% punctuality?

The 100 per cent punctuality on July 1 has been achieved when the network is running just 230 passenger trains – along with about 3,000 loaded freight trains and 2,200 empty ones.

The Indian Railways has announced that it achieved 100 per cent punctuality of its passenger trains on July 1, a never-before feat. Its previous best on-time performance, according to the Railways, was 99.54 per cent on June 23, when just one train got delayed.

“Trains in the Fast Lane: Enhancing services to unprecedented levels, Indian Railways made history on 1st July, 2020 by achieving 100% punctuality rate,” Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal posted on Twitter on Thursday (July 2).

Is this a big deal?

This is no mean achievement – it is indeed not an easy ask given all the constraints that the Railways usually face while running a train on its designated path and time slot.

It is important, however, to remember the context – very few trains are running now, and the punctuality of the Railways can hardly be compared with its own performance on this count in pre-Covid times, when it ran over 13,000 passenger trains and over 8,000 freight trains every day.

The 100 per cent punctuality on July 1 has been achieved when the network is running just 230 passenger trains – along with about 3,000 loaded freight trains and 2,200 empty ones.

The reasons that usually cause delays have been systematically eliminated, a spokesman for the Railways said. Also, trains that are delayed by up to 15 minutes are considered to have been on time, as per practice.

Why do trains get delayed, anyway?

There are a number of reasons, which is also why the achievement of the Railways is significant.

There are unforeseen situations such as a failure of assets like the signalling system and overhead power equipment. Several types of breakdowns can occur, related to rolling stock, tracks, etc., that make a train lose time along the way.

Then there are external unforeseen problems like run-over cattle and humans, agitations on the tracks, and the like.

And what have the Railways been doing right?

“The maintenance of tracks was carried out in a quick time during the Covid period in various critical sections, so the average speed increased, and stretches of slowing down were minimised,” the Railways spokesperson said.

“Better and modern signalling is also making an impact. Another reason is better planning and operations analysis.” He attributed this to better monitoring at the Division level, and said that the entire organisation at every level was focussed on this.

How do the delays impact the overall system?

In normal times, these failures take away a lot of scheduled time when the train is detained even for a short time, because making up the lost time during the remainder of the journey is a tricky business.

It’s not as though a train can just run faster to make up for lost time. In a network chock-a-block with trains, a train hardly ever has such leeway built into its pre-set path.

Any train that gets delayed inordinately due to whatever reason during the journey theoretically eats into the “path” – or time slot allotted on the track – of another train. It then becomes a matter of which train to prioritise. Conventionally, Rajdhanis and premium trains get priority of path over ordinary mail/express trains.

Usually in railway operations, a train running on time, maintaining its schedule on its given path, is not disturbed to make space for a train that has suffered irredeemable delays along the way and is now hopelessly “out of path”, so to speak. Freight trains, whose runs are not exactly time-sensitive, are usually held up to make way for passenger trains.

But why do the Railways have to juggle operations in this way?

It’s a constantly dynamic scenario in which railway operations professionals take calls all the time.

At the heart of the problem is network capacity constraints. Which basically means that there are more trains than the network can handle in a given time bracket.

Around 60 per cent of all train traffic is on the Golden Quadrilateral, even though it represents just about 15 per cent of the total network. There are projects to enhance capacity by building additional lines and modernising signalling systems, etc.

The Railways are working on what is called a “zero-based timetable”. In this concept, which is to be introduced soon, every train that enters the network is justified based on needs and costs. It is expected to make train operations more seamless.

That's quite heartening to read about. It is indeed a milestone for the railways.

Although I feel this was possible due to the reduction in the no. Of trains run daily rather than a major organisational overhaul. This record would be more impressive if we can achieve it at peak loads, the Japanese should be an inspiration in that regard.
The Japanese cannot be matched. They apologise when trains arrive EARLY at a destination. Honestly, they do.

It's only a matter of aim and execution, devilish details notwithstanding :p:
The Primary reason for Train delay is FOG and Freight trains that run on passenger rails.

Modi govt. took concrete steps to address this issue and achieve this milestone. Its foolish to credit this to CoVid.

4 Reasons Why Your Train Won’t Delay This Winter Season: Indian Railways Unleashes 4 Technical Innovations!

Winter is coming! If you are worried about your train being delayed in this winter season, blow your fears away! Indian Railways is now planning to implement a lot of innovative techniques to avoid delaying of railways due to foggy weather in the winter.

Let’s find out what techniques will be implemented by Indian Railways for making sure the railways reach passengers on time!

Modified Automatic System For Signalling

A modified automatic system for signalling has been employed in the Northern Railways (NR) and North Central Railways (NCR) zones. This system will boost the level of safety when trains are running in the automatic block signalling sections. Its also puts a limit on the number of trains travelling between two railway stations in the winter where there is a lot of fog.

Painting Signal Boards With Bright And Easily Available Colours

The signal boards on the railway network, passenger and goods warning boards, signals at railway stations, interlocked level crossing gates, and the semaphore signal arms have been painted with vibrant and bright colours or luminous strips. The bright colours will increase the visibility of the boards, and will, therefore, help catch the eye of the pilots of the locomotives.

Inspection During Foggy Weather

Official inspection and night inspection will be conducted at the officer and supervisor level, are being conducted, especially during the foggy weather. This will make the maintenance staff alert and spread awareness amongst them as well.

Indian Railways’ Loco Pilots Will Be Given Fog PASS Devices

Fog PASS devices have been handed out to loco pilots to help them with the movement of the train in the winter fog. These are devices that are enabled with GPS and are handheld portable devices and are given to the loco pilots who work in the areas that have huge amounts of fog.

These devices help the pilots by using audio visual alarm which goes off if there is a landmark within the geo-fence range of the locomotive.

These devices have been fed with vital information, such as the location of the stations, signals, warning boards, level crossing gates as well as the whistle for level crossing (W/L) boards in the section. The device is used to know the speed of the locomotive, distance and time required to reach the landmarks. About 12,205 Fog PASS devices have been handed out to the Indian Railways network.

"Polarization" also known as "Hindu consolidation". How is this a bad thing ? lol.
Tbh I'd had completely forgotten about the new rail corridor, I blame lack of caffeine ☺.

To a large extent dedicated line will ease the pressure on IR's sprawling transportation lines but it's true test would be how it performs during peak loads.

Yes, I recently travelled by train and it was reaching to stations before the scheduled time even 10-15 mins..

It means, railway tracks are over loaded with trains. Now, less trains are running but with punctuality.

Indian Railways achieves 100% punctuality for first time in history, 201 trains on time

Indian Railways has said for the first time in the history of the Railways, all trains achieved 100% punctuality on July 1. No trains were delayed among the 201 that run on this day, said the Indian Railways.

Indian Railways has said for the first time in the history of the Railways, all trains achieved 100% punctuality on July 1. No trains were delayed among the 201 that run on this day, said the Indian Railways.

In the ongoing lockdown, Indian Railways is running on a restricted capacity with all regular passenger trains cancelled. Indian Railways is now running special trains to ferry passengers stranded or those travelling out of necessity. These are specific routes across the country devised to help movement in the current situation.

Indian Railways has said the previous best was 99.54% on June 23 when only one train was delayed. But on July 1, Indian Railways achieved 100% punctuality with the 201 trains.

In a statement, the Indian Railways said, “First time ever in the history of Indian Railways, 100% punctuality of trains achieved with all trains on time. Previous best was 99.54% on 23.06.2020 with one train getting delayed.”

Meanwhile, the Railways on Wednesday formally kickstarted its plans to allow private entities to operate passenger trains on its network by inviting request for qualifications (RFQ) for participation on 109 pairs of routes through 151 modern trains, the national transporter said.

The project would entail a private sector investment of about Rs 30,000 crore.

Last week, the Railways cancelled all regular mail, express and passenger services as well as suburban trains till August 12 in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

ll special trains -- 15 pairs running on the Rajdhani routes since May 12 and 100 pairs of mail/express trains operating since June 1 -- are the ones still running along with goods trains.
Good going, Pakistan railways should foloow

In 2020 it is 1,23,236 kM.
Mind to tell us where the where the figure comes from?

The India railway yearbook says the total route length is 67,956 km. Mind to tell us where the other 60,000km comes from? From your big mouth magic?
1612666837557.png

And also, the same annual report says, the average number of passenger trains runs daily is about 13k.
1612666945538.png

And now you are celebrating the 100% punctuality, because only 201 passenger trains were running that day? or less than 2% of the railway capacity was utilized that day.

You can ask your railway system to always work on this loading condition, so you can always celebrate the 100% punctuality

.
so normally 13000 trains are run. But on july 1st only 201 trains ran due to covid lockdown. And since these paltry 201 trains ran on time indian govt is claiming 100% on time running for ONE day during lock down. Is this right? i new this is a media hungry govt but for this it needs to take a cake.

It's like I ate my dad's lunch and claimed a "milestone" achievement since I had 3 square meals today for the first time in my life.

Not sure why Indians are so happy.
