Lucknow: Police have foiled a militant plot to kidnap Rahul Gandhi, an Indian television station reported on Friday.
NDTV said Islamic militants planned to abduct the 37-year-old lawmaker to bargain for the release of 42 imprisoned terrorists.
The suspected militants were arrested after a tip-off early on Friday near Lucknow, capital of northern Uttar Pradesh state.
"They were trained for a week to pick up techniques to kidnap a politician and to survive after the act," senior police officer Vikram Singh told reporters.
The militants were suspected members of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed group, he said.
