For many generations Indian pilots have given us the privilege of being their hosts. Our great hospitality ensured they returned to us in regular intervals. Contrary to their media hue and cry we not only treated them well but also provided them with world class food and tea. Nevertheless we are also grateful to them by providing us with countless souvenirs and War trophies at times when we desperately wanted them.
We held many IAF POWs but only a few got the media limelight. Let us start with a Sardarji, Squadron Leader Brij pal Singh Sikand who flew his Gnat aircraft straight to us and landed it at Pasrur airstrip.He was repatriated with full honour. We dont mind if more IAF pilots follow suit!!!
Another one that took prominence was a Hunter pilot Flight Lieutenant (later Air Marshal) KC Cariappa who was the son of KM Cariappa, the first Indian Army Commander-in-Chief. General Ayub Khan himself contacted General Cariappa, with information about his son's safety. Even General Musa visited him in the hospital where he was being looked after. Below is a farewell picture of Squadron Leader Sikand, Pilloo Kakar, and Flt Lieutenants Mani Lowe, Lal Sadarangani, MV Singh and Vijay Mayadev before boarding a PAF Fokker plane.
During Kargil war Group Captain K. Nachiketa was shot down in his MIG 27 aircraft. He was handed over to India within 8 days. Air Commodore Kaiser Tufail (r) made sure he was treated well and repatriated soon.
Last but not least how can we not mention our tea fan,Wing Commander Abhinandan,who made our day On 27 February 2019,when his MIG 21 Bison was shot down by our air warriors. He was repatriated after two days and with full protocol.
I like to end this by saying to the rookie IAF pilots ,instead of crashing your aircrafts back home let your neighbour(Pakistan) do the honours.
