Kumbhir-class L-21 and L-22 LSTs (in the middle), and L-32, L-34 LCUs of the Indian Navy beached during an amphibious landing.

KOLKATA: Naval ship INS Guldar today returned to Port Blair after a major upgradation.

INS Guldar was welcomed by Naval officers of the Andaman and Nicobar command at a reception in Port Blair,, officials said.

Commissioned in 1985, the Kumbhir-class landing ship was sent to Cochin Shipyard for a full fledged major upgrade.

INS Guldar operates in close cooperation with the Army and Indian Air Force to achieve perfection in complex amphibious operations.

The ship, capable of conducting opposed and combat beaching operations under diverse conditions, is commanded by Commander Arun Bahuguna.

IN's amphibious warfare capabilities are on a roll! - Four LCU's of Mark IV Project already launched followed by the extensive upgrades of existing Amphibious Warfare Vessels.

India needs more bigger landing ships, with bigger tonnage and with helicopter support, i see there is no helicopter support during the operation this is a major drawback, if the enemy is entrenched in the island then the IN soldiers will be sitting ducks hence there should be helicopter support.

That is where the LPDs and their escort ships come in. The LPDs will fly off Helos with advance landing parties with MARCOS/SFs and other Helos will fly in fire-support. Remember that nearly every IN Ship from Corvette size upwards can operate Helos. Air Cover in the form of Jets will also be available. What you are seeing in the pics are only one aspect of the op; the landing on the beach-head.

Look nice.......

@sancho do we have enough quantity of these beasts?

Yes and No.
Depending on the size of the Expeditionary Force and the Task laid out for them. As of now, a Brigade can be landed. More Ships are required if a larger force is involved.

Coming soon - the Japanese helicopter Carrier - IZUMO!

Otherwise why was Manohar Parrikar given a tour of this Japanese helicopter carrier?

It is configured with a large flight deck and hangars, designed to accommodate up to 28 helicopters of all kinds including the Apaches we're acquiring soon!

That would sort out the problem of close air support during beach landings.

Cheers!

sorry sir India is not buying these, India is only buying US2 amphibious planes which will take at least 05 years to come

I don't see any landing crafts like US LCU.. Do we have such things? Because during war, it would be way too dangerous to take ships near shores where they are sitting ducks....

Indian Navy has LCU's of Mark IV Project - The ship is fitted with an advanced Integrated Platform Management System for remote control of propulsion, auxiliary and power generating equipment. Two CRN-91 indigenous 30 MM guns to provide fire support during operations will also be fitted onboard. The ship can be deployed for maritime roles like maritime security, beaching/un-beaching, humanitarian relief operations and evacuation from distant islands, search and rescue operations and peace-keeping missions.

Indian Navy Multi-Role Support Vessel programme is probably what you meant - We are to procure four of them -

No, I meant LCUs like in movie Saving Private Ryan... Instead of these ships going near the shore, isn't it better to use landing crafts (until the beach is cleared)?

You'll be surprised!! There are a lot of deals going that are not yet in the public domain. Wait and watch! :-)
