@jaibi .. you are right... IA gets average people, and its not first choice among Indian youth... where as probably PA attracts far better candidate from your pool ...

Thirdly, my argument regarding the building block of the military was not about its role in the society but the officer's role in the militray, no machine can replace an officer. See, India is engaged in counterinsurgency ops and thus must retain a highly trained officer who will manage his unit as well as the affected population well and it is important to note that Indian counterinsurgency programmes are in territories that constitute itself (like Pakistan, unlike the USA) thus technology will one day replace the type of military offical needed but that time's not here right now.

The dependence on Officers, even Junior Officers is again a Colonial Vestige. When in fact the institution of both the NCOs and the JCOs (which is peculiarly South Asian, btw) can be well utilised instead in Junior Leadership. There is an over-dependence on Officers in our systems, which I consider to be flawed. In the technical branches of the IA for instance,e.g. in the EME and Signals; I'v seen exceptional men at JCO level and to a lesser extent at NCO level who could carry out any task of Junior Leadership. Mind you; I'm speaking of about 30 years ago. But the existing system does not allow for that at all. Atleast the one that I know of, from earlier.

As for the links; I've had no luck with them so far, so I'll see later.

There is a great deal of grousing about falling standards etc. Partly valid and partly not so. The raw materials are themselves changing, hence the production methods also should be adapted accordingly. As well as tinkering with the product-mix.

But notwithstanding purported shortages; the Military Estts. in the neighborhood are simply bloated. Some judicious paring-down is required.

May be you are correct ...but then 10,000 solid applicants for 1 vacancy sounds rather exaggeration !

Not for 1 vacancy..Last AFSB they had a shortlist of 16000 guys clearing the AFCAT and eligible for AFSB selection for just 250 vacancies. This time also it is going to be similar if not more.

On Every six months more than 200,000+ apply for '300' vacancies for officers. But I feel now they have already/or increasing seats.

Please, I would like for you to refer to the article again, the IMA grads alone cannot run an army you need a good corps of engineers, docs and countless others in supportive roles to run a modern military and it's the suffrage there that's causing a steady decline.

Secondly, it's not that the thousands don't apply it's what becomes of those 600 few selected, the end product is not delivering.

I think we should discuss the phenomena holistically, don't you?
Oh man the competetion for for posts like engineering and doctors in the armed forces is even higher.
Last feb there were about 125000 applicants for about 200 engineering vacancies in airforce
and for AFMC(Armed Forces Medical College) examination every year over a lakh people apply for a mere 130 seats

Only the cream 0.001% of the applicants get into these jobs man.Surely I think we can expect atleast 200 excellent good candidates from 1,00,000

They have foreign nationals too via usmle to fill the gap and get the best brains

Plus backlog of repeaters(ppl who didn't clear mle in first go).............so it all balances out eventually

its not reservation.. there is no culture of rewarding good people there.. which is why even good people lose their enthusiasm after few years.

Even average people can do brilliant job if you motivate them

u are telling me there is no reservation??

i fill out forms every year so don't tell me pls

here is break up for u

1)50% general class
2)22.5%----schedule casts+tribes
3)27%------other backward castes(obc's)

so pls don't talk in philosophical terms here,,,let the facts be facts

I said 'its not reservation.. there is no culture of rewarding good people there .. ' ....
i did not say there is no reservation.. I meant reservation is not the culprit but lack of incentive'.

I know, I keep telling people that I can touch the tip of my nose with my tongue but is there any appreciation..NO! Just disdain and tittering, how is one to thrive in such a situation?
