Indian girl commits suicide after parents failed to build toilet at home

See how people start realizing something as a problem when someone makes them aware about it. But committing suicide is hardly any solution. But this news will shake many out of slumber.

Life is hard in most parts of the world.

Comrade PDF members, appreciate what you have and dont despair over what you dont have.

Life can be much worse.

How can they help? They cant go around building a toilet for every home. People have to do that themselves. Yes a main sewage line might be the governments prerogative but even in 1st world farming areas they use septic tanks because there is no sewage line. The reason was more because poverty and jahaiz. Fix that and not one but two bathrooms will appear in every house.
some govts are providing subsidies to poor people to build toilets. Sanitation/educaton/law&order are state subjects, and there are huge disparity between well governed states and poorly governed ones.

Yes, but sanitation does not mean building bathrooms in peoples homes as education means that a teacher sent to your house everyday. There is only so much that can be done. I agree with the disparity between different states but this problem is not one that should be added on poor governance. Building a bathroom for every home would just be unfeasible and silly.

Pakistan meets sanitation MDG target, says UN report | Pakistan Today

I'm happy that Atleast Pak is doing much better than any other developing nation in this regard.

Same report we are behind in both poverty and education. We can not keep comparing ourselves in the subcontinent. Both these countries need to get to the 21st century fast.

I am not blaming govt or politicians, I am just saying govt CAN help if they want. There was a massive campaign to remove polio and we spent crores of rupees, set up an organization that monitors and manages it, collects data, has crack team to respond etc.

Govt CAN, if they think its a big issue, provide incentives. There is a media campaign going on about building toilets, not sure how effective it is.
We are spending billions on armaments, on subsidized food for poor, on farm subsidy, why not on sanitation. Its a one time thing that does not require substantial continuous investment.

Awareness is another issue.... govt can build toilets, but there are several who believes toilet is not hygienic

More than hygiene try to advocate importance of privacy linked to toilets. This would get more attention.

in Hazara region of KPK there were very few toilets as the region is hilly and agricultural so people used to go to fields at night but with passage of time now 99% hoses have toilets which is the result of privacy issues than hygiene

I feel bad for the girl..RIP....
Build some toilets so no one ever do this again.

.
Rip to the girl and that part of our country have some serious issues

I really don't get it. Even if there is no sewage line, toilets can still be built. All that is needed is to collect the excreta and dumped into a designated pit. In our villages, we use to have 'khuddi', basically a raised platform. A pot filled with ashes is placed underneath and replaced every morning. What is so difficult to have designated a 3x3' space for this purpose?

I totally get it. Absolutely the government is capable of doing such things. It is also capable of installing stoves in houses where there is still firewood inhalation going on. We need to press governments to bring in more opportunities for the down trodden to get more opportunities to earn more. Improve law and order to have people taking advantage of these people or who do not pay them their fair share for the work they do. Those are the real cause of not having basic amenities. Polio is a bane on society. Its a transferable disease which has far reaching implications.

Khuddi = septic tanks. Exactly my point.

Awareness directly related to poverty and education.

Add corruption to it..... The issue is severe in states like Bihar, and jharkand where the politicians are one of the most corrupted.....

.
Rip to the poor girl.
This issue is becoming very serious and needs some urgent attention by Indian govt.

this issue has little to do with corruption.
There are poor people who do not have space to build a toilet, and there are people who can afford but still dont build because its not priority for them, they are used to sh*tting in the field.
I even know about people who have build toilet but still like to crap outside... because they like the 'freedom'..:disagree:
