Indian girl commits suicide after parents failed to build toilet at home

RIP to the deceased.

Poor sanitation remains a major public health concern, systematic reviews have found that a range of important health challenges, including diarrhoeal diseases and soil-transmitted helminth infections are directly related to the agenda. A number of studies have also suggested that poor sanitation may be associated with adverse nutritional outcomes via different pathways, including diarrhoea and gastro-intestinal disorders such as tropical sprue or tropical enteropathy. Children exposed to bad sanitation are more likely to result in stunting, e.g. indicators of enteropathy and are notably shorter on average.

this issue has little to do with corruption.
There are poor people who do not have space to build a toilet, and there are people who can afford but still dont build because its not priority for them, they are used to sh*tting in the field.
I even know about people who have build toilet but still like to crap outside... because they like the freedom..:disagree:

I did not mean it in direct way, rather indirectly......

The incident took place in Jharkhand’s Dumka district with reports suggesting the parents of the 17-year-old girl were looking to save money for her marriage.

bewakoofon, marriage gaya bhaadd me... pehle zindagi ko khushi ki taraf modo aur sab sahi sahulaton ko lao. :hitwall:

RIP to the girl
Actually India is doing it's best and government is building Toilets According to latest survey in just 6 to 7 months the people who were deprived of Sanitation fell by 35% so such you can think how much massive operation is going on
Under 'Swaccha Bharat" Abhiyan toilets are being build and till 2019 the problem will be eradicated.
So i am happy that steps are taken and the days are not long that we will be free of this menace but at the same time i feel sad for the Deceased.:(
RIP once again.

the point is her idiotic parents were saving money for her marriage, as if that was the most urgent thing in the universe.

they could have easily built a toilet for their immediate comfort but did not... their idea was to collect money for her dowry so that they could get rid of her.

so here is yet another lady who died because of india's dowry problem.

idiots.

Awareness is another issue.... govt can build toilets, but there are several who believes toilet is not hygienic

Building toilets is not difficult....But availability of water is. As Indians are not accustomed to toilet papers!! No body thinks that.

I'm a bit confused. What does it mean that parents refused? Why refuse to make a toilet?

I have a question, if Indian members can elaborate? Why is toilet a major issue in India or South Asia? Is it because they can't build enough number of toilets or they don't want?

I can't understand, how can toilet even be an issue? It's not like it's a sophisticated thing.

As per the news reports - her parents turned down her repeated pleas to construct a toilet at home as they wanted to save money for the 17-year-old’s marriage.

As far as India is concerned - we have the best and the worst instances coming out of the same country - In north-eastern states like Sikkim - proper sanitation is given utmost importance which is evident from the fact that it is the first Indian state to achieve 100% sanitation with zero open defecation.

Sikkim becomes first state to achieve 100% sanitation | News | Environment

Whereas on the other hand in central states like Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh - Many people regard open defecation as part of a wholesome, healthy, virtuous life - It may sound insane but thanks to the widespread illiteracy especially in rural India people tend to think so - in fact these very states account for India's drag in HDI as well.

India's enduring shame is clearly rooted in cultural attitudes. More than half a century after Independence, many Indians continue to relieve themselves in the open and litter unhesitatingly, but keep their homes spotlessly clean. Yes, the state has failed to extend sanitation facilities, but people must also take the blame.

As far is building toilets is concerned - We are building millions to toilets every year - In the past year, the government had built more than 5.8 million toilets - up from 4.9 million the previous year. But the problem is the Government's information, education and communication (IEC) strategy through which it needs to address this mindset making it “top priority”.

But overall - the trend has been positive - India reduced open defecation by 31% as 394 million gained access to improved sanitation facilities in the last two decades - with 44% of people going outside in 2015—down from 75% in 1990.
