A girl committed suicide in India after her parents turned down her request to build a toilet in their house, it has been reported.

The incident took place in Jharkhand’s Dumka district with reports suggesting the parents of the 17-year-old girl were looking to save money for her marriage.

Police officials have said the girl was found hanging from the ceiling of her room by family members.

The victim has been identified as Khushboo Kumari who was a first year BA student in AN College and was embarrassed to have to go out to the fields for daily ablutions.

India’s congress leader Digvijay Singh called on nation to wake up and build toilets on priority following the incident.

“A girl in Jharkhand committed suicide as her parents refused to build toilet ! India as a Nation must wake up and build toilets on priority,” Singh said through an online message posted on his Twitter account.

According to reports, Jharkhand’s rural areas has the country’s highest rate of open defecation and around 92.4 percent people in the state do not have toilets.

No Comment other than "Afghan" source and is that reliable?

Edit. We also have this problem but ours is minor compared to our neighbours. However if Pakistan had this problem as "bad" as India has we would be ran out of these forums with the ridicule we would get.

This is a massive problem in India. Govt is trying to help, but it will take a lot of time. It will definitely be reduced in next 10 year.

This problem must be solved ASAP.

Probably the young woman faced harassment at the hands of hooligans when going out for fulfilling natural needs probably that is why she forced her parents to make tiolet at home.

India desperately needs to work on this.....

the pressure must be kept on by indian and international media, otherwise nothing ever happens in south asia without 10,000 psi pressure by awam. That's just how politics is, in this part of the world. Politicians are just disgusting....

actually its opposite.. govt of India does not give a sh*t about foreign media.. we have been isolated for quite long...
its the public perception and local media that govt is scared of.

in any case, keep the pressure on man.....awareness programs, protests etc.....that kind of thing...

it's really sad that it takes such serious incidents until anyone in the parliament bothers taking notice of the problems....same in pakistan....almost 1.5k dead simply because lack of power/water. And still nothing from the gov. except condolences and even that after a long time.....pathetic state of affairs in south asia....We really are animals...The west isn't that wrong about us....

rip

sadly, many parts of India are just as bad as sub saharan africa.. poverty, mindsets, lack of development... fukd up

on a lighter note, I once noticed an Indian user here defend the lack of toilets saying something to the extent of "some Indian households are so cleanliness-conscious, they prefer not to have a 'feces receptacle' at home":hang2::suicide2:

should copy the Japanese toilet design. seems like it would be cheap to build and maintain.

How can they help? They cant go around building a toilet for every home. People have to do that themselves. Yes a main sewage line might be the governments prerogative but even in 1st world farming areas they use septic tanks because there is no sewage line. The reason was more because poverty and jahaiz. Fix that and not one but two bathrooms will appear in every house.

Awareness is another issue.... govt can build toilets, but there are several who believes toilet is not hygienic

India is a federal country like pakistan, and such issues tend to come from poorer states. There is no magic bullet, rest of Indians do not have much influence on state govt (in this case govt of Jharkhand), but yes, generally we can create awareness across the country and hope even the poorer states change. They are changing, just not fast enough. I dont like blaming politicians for social issues.

We need to be in a state of war with poverty.

Such conditions in India in this day and age is appalling and despite the Govt awareness program and histrionics in media nothing seems to be happening at ground level.

Jharkhand is the most naturally gifted state in India with abundance of natural resources and ironically it's people the most down trodden.

We have politicians like Madhu Koda in Jharkhand who managed to become the Chief Minister despite being an independent candidate and there was free loot by Govt. Madhu Koda himself was found to have stolen close to 1 Billion USD in just one year in mining scam.

Interestingly most tainted ministers and bureaucrats in Jharkhand are those from SC/ST communities who manage to come into position of power due to reservation, positive discrimination and vote bank politics.
