NEWS DESK: Gauri Lankesh, a senior Kannada journalist and activist known for her criticism of Hindutva extremism and advocacy of secularism, was shot dead outside her house in Bengaluru, India, Tuesday night. When a brutal murder happens, natural human reaction is sorrow and expression of grief. Not so much in the case of Indian right-wingers.

We are living in an age when some countries that act as big global players have rightwing parties in the power corridors. We have Trump in the US and Modi in India – since the election of these leaders, we have witnessed a surge in hate crimes directed at minorities.

In such times, the oppression and persecution of left-leaning voices has touched lowest of lows. Be it the issue of missing persons in India and Pakistan, executions in Saudi Arabia and Iran, imprisonments in Turkey or publicly committed hate crimes such as those reported in the West, voices of dissent are crushed by all possible means pretty much everywhere. In all such scenarios, it is a dissenting minority that is brutally crushed by a mighty majority.

Like-minded people in India and other parts of the world have described Gauri Lankesh’s killing as an attempt to silence ‘those who believe in democracy and decency’ and have called for protests across the country. This is quite a natural reaction – condemnation of a murder is something that anyone with a heart and conscience would do. Unfortunately, when masses are blinded by jingoism, bigotry and intolerance, they resort to celebrating such murders. Let’s take a look at how some Indian right-wingers have responded to the shameless murder:

#GauriLankesh is sympethatic to #Naxals who kill thousands, they don't say a word.
I am unsympathetic to her and they cry foul#LeftistLogic

Those who blv in bloody Revolution now mourning fate of Gauri Lankesh. How does it feel to be on the receiving end?#Bengaluru#GauriLankesh

So much hue &cry for Gauri Lankesh. Where were these humanitarians when RSS workers were being murdered in #Kerala?#GauriLankesh#Bengaluru

So, Commy Gauri Lankesh has been murdered mercilessly. Your deeds always come back to haunt you, they say. Amen.#Bengaluru#GauriLankesh

RSS supporters on social media celebrating her assassination!

There were more anti-secular people spewing hatred:

#GauriLankesh's case should be handed over to CBI. Naxalites have a history of eliminating their own people for political gains.

Instead of finding the real culprits & getting justice, #GauriLankesh journo frnds hv already blamed RW & seem satisfied.. What a sad story!

There were those who remembered her in words that she deserved and/or criticised her murder:

Gauri Lankesh was a voice that spoke for all of us. A voice that was silenced. #FreedomOfSpeech #justice #heartbreaker#gaurilankesh

Solidarity and condolences to journalists, activist friends in #India on cowardly murder of #GauriLankesh. Reminds me of #Sabeen #Pakistan

Gauri Lankesh, the glue that held everyone together: An account from a close friend
What do I write about Gauri Lankesh? That she was one of most genuine, kind-hearted, sincere, loving and forthright journalists? That I cannot accept she has gone to a better place (undoubtedly)?

Extremist forces shares strong bond irrespective of boundries. They killed #MashalKhan & so on in Pakistan #GauriLankesh & so on) in India.

#GauriLankesh Gauri shot dead recalls the murder of journalist Sabeen shot point blank in Pakistan. Both critical of majoritarianism.

Complete Silence of Hindutva brigade/RSS/BJP is a clear indication who is behind the murder of #GauriLankesh . Thanks!

Journalism is nothing without courage. Democracy is nothing without dissent. You had plenty of both #GauriLankesh You live on as inspiration

Saddened by the murder of #GauriLankesh. India wasn't supposed to be a country where journalists are silenced by bullets. Her voice rings on

You can't silence someone with bullets. One can kill a person but their ideas will be alive forever! RIP #GauriLankesh#GauriLankeshMurder

In India we bow to frauds like Ram Rahim and kill men and women of reason & inquiry like Pansare, Dabholkar, Kalburgi & now #gaurilankesh

To kill someone for their views is not Democracy, its beginnings of a Banana Republic, where violence speaks louder than words #GauriLankesh

Strongly condemn #GauriLankesh murder. No place for such brazen intolerance in a civilised democratic society. Exemplary punishment needed.

Yes. Dabholkar, Pansare, Kalburgi, Gauri Lankesh were assassinated in the same style - by saffron terrorists.

Unfortunately, the same mindset prevails in our country when it comes to Malala Yousafzai or Salmaan Taseer. We all know someone who celebrated the attack on Malala or hailed the murderer of Taseer. We witnessed a mass funeral for Mumtaz Qadri and then his mazaar was set up. One such person, who holds Qadri in utmost holy regard, is contesting the NA-120 by-election. We also have the likes of Masroor Jhangvi sitting in the assembly. And who doesn’t remember Sabeen Mahmud and Mashal Khan?

In India, Gauri Lankesh’s killing is not the first such murder. According to NDTV, there were two more similar killings in Maharashtra, that of leftist thinker Govind Pansare in 2015 and rationalist and anti-superstition activist Narendra Dabholkar in 2013.

Why are all the countries becoming so extremely polarized? Hardliner extremists hold positions of power and a reflection of their attitude is hence seen in the approach of the masses. In 1845, Karl Marx pointed out: “The ideas of the ruling class are in every epoch the ruling ideas, i.e. the class which is the ruling material force of society, is at the same time its ruling intellectual force.” The celebration of Gauri Lankesh’s death should not come as a surprise. As long as parties like BJP sit in power corridors, intolerant masses will continue to be unabashedly hateful towards any and every voice of dissent.

Another "anti national" shot dead? She is not the first, and she won't be the last.

Freedom is not Free.
