Raipur: Ruling out the possibility of deploying Army in anti-Naxal operations, Defence Minister Manohar Parrkar on Wednesday said if demanded, armed forces would extend "logistical support" and "provide training" to police in tackling the menace.

"Foreigners are not involved in it (naxal movement). We use army where outside forces are involved. We use army against terrorists in Kashmir," Parrikar told reporters in response to a query on whether army would be roped against growing naxalism in Chhattisgarh.

The minister, however, added, "We can provide training and logistical support (to the paramilitary and local police) if demanded."

Its a good decision by Defense Minister for not deploying Army against Naxals.

Paramilitaries and Police should be provided precise weapons and good training and even be armed with UAV to tackle them.

Analysis of the data on sanctioned strength of State Police Forces shows that as on 01.01.2009 out of 20.56 lakhs (2.056 millions) of total police force in the entire country 16.19 lakhs (1.619 millions) was Civil Police including District Armed Police and the remaining 4.37 lakhs (0.437 million) was State Armed Police.

In a daring attack, Maoists targeted a police camp in Narayanpur district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday injuring four policemen.

“The Maoists opened indiscriminate fire at the Basing police camp in Narayanpur early on Wednesday. They [Maoists] also hurled country-made bombs at the camp. Four of our jawans were injured in the attack,” said Narayanpur Superintendent of Police Amit Kamble.

According to an officer involved in anti-Maoist operations in Bastar, the ultras fired 35 country-made crude shells and HE (high explosive) bombs on the camp.

Two-hour attack

The attack lasted for over two hours in which the rebels managed to destroy the wireless communication system of the Basing camp.

“Our jawans fired back in retaliation, but the Maoists managed to escape taking advantage of darkness,” said the SP.

Constables Manmohan, Virhul Bhagat, Vinay Chandra and Ajay Tigga suffered injuries during the attack. Vinay Chandra and Manmohan were reportedly critical and were shifted to Jagdalpur headquarters for treatment.

Police worried

The daring attack has left the police establishment worried as many new camps have been set up in some of the most sensitive patches of Bastar in last two years, effectively curbing the free movement of the rebels.

According to police sources, the camps even in the most sensitive and difficult terrains are not usually targeted by Maoists, but Wednesday’s attack showed that with increasing pressure of security forces across the Bastar region, even the camps could be vulnerable to the rebel attacks.

Ahead of Rajnath Singh's visit, 2 CAF jawans injured in IED blast - The Hindu
May 29, 2015 15:20 IST

Ahead of Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Raipur on Saturday, two jawans of Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast triggered by naxals in insurgency-hit Sukma district on Friday.

The explosion occurred while a team of CAF was patrolling near Dharampenta village under Kistaram police station limits to ensure security of an under construction culvert, Sukma Superintendent of Police D Shrawan told PTI.

When the security forces were cordoning off the construction site, located nearly 450 kms away from Raipur on Konta-Kistaram route in the extreme south Bastar, naxals triggered the explosion, leaving two jawans injured, he said.

Firing also broke out between security forces and rebels which lasted for a short period following which naxals fled into the dense forests, the SP added.

Soon after the incident, the jawans were rushed to a local health centre, he said.

Meanwhile, a combing operation has been launched in the region to nab the attackers.

The Home Minister will arrive at Raipur on Saturday afternoon for his two-day visit to Chhattisgarh.

During the tour, Mr. Singh will also visit Sukma to inaugurate a newly built fortified police station at Dornapal.
