Indian Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Fifth Generation Stealth Fighter Jet Program Cleared ~ ASIAN DEFENCE NEWS

India has reportedly cleared a fifth generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA)to be developed by 2017 whose total cost is estimated at $2bn.

According to a news report in The Hindu newspaper, the Govt of India has released Rs. 100 crore($20 million) last month to the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), an Indian government controlled research body which has also developed the LCA Tejus fourth generation fighter.

"AMCA, when developed and produced, would probably be the first medium combat aircraft with 20 tonne weight in the world. Similar aircraft being developed by the United States and Russia are in the range of 30 to 35 tonnes," PS Subramanyam, ADA Director and Programme Director (Combat Aircraft), was quoted as saying in the news report.
The AMCA is to be a twin-engined 5th generation stealth multirole fighter, which will complement the HAL Tejas, the Sukhoi/HAL FGFA, the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, and other aircraft in the Indian Air Force.

2017 is just for first flight and it will take another 4-5 years before FOC.

well with experience gained from LCA and pakfa i hope they can do by 2020....

even 2017 looks very early.. thts only 6 years
if that happens amca might have lot of lca components.

Yaar Agni 2P toh dhang se launch nahin ho raha in logon se... AMCA banayenge....
(they should first make Agni2P a success before working on advanced product like AMCA)

Aaj mujhe bahut gussa aa rhaa hai in logon pe.
(I am pissed off at DRDO)

Why bro??Agni 2P is a new system and a snag is very much expected. That's why it's called 'test launch'.Good thing is that the snag was detected before launch.Besides,it's a DRDL project, what it has to do with AMCA which is being developed jointly by ADE,GTRE,LRDE,DARE etc.You should read before posting here.

at that time, most of the countries will be working on 6th gen:drag:

Yes, most countries will be working on 6th Gen and we will also be working on one called as AURA.
PAKFA is the true class 5th Gen plane which will be already there for us so no need to worry. May be IAF wants a complete fleet of 5th Gen plane, like US F-35 and its good to have one...

Definitely, AMCA will carry most of LCA component or there improved version. DRDO/HAL need not to work more(from scratch) on
1. Ejection seat
2. Landing gear
3. Avionics
4. Engine (first few prototype may have GE 414 or Kaveri)
5. Radar (It may keep 2032 or 2052 if 2052 ready by time)

Extensive work needed in these area
1. Airframe design
2. Stealth design
3. shielding Engine heat

I think if HAL and DRDO give a push, 2017 is achievable..

Just let him cool down....
Most importantly,
In the moments of failure, one should ponder over the past achievements and should appreciate how much distance has been covered and capitalize on that rather than getting bogged down.

Hope DRDL/DRDO comes out victorious like it has been numerously in the past.

No, they want an indigenous 5th gen fighter with similar features of FGFA, which is totally ridiculous and based on pride resons. Just look at the differences to F35:

- F35 replaces all older gen fighters, to give US forces a complete 5th gen fleet. AMCA will be used in addition to 5th gen aircrafts, but also to LCA, MMRCA and MKI, which will remain in service for nearly 30 years alongside of it and for similar roles.

- F35 is a single engine fighter, without any focus on flight performance, unlike the twin engined F22, that is designed for air superiority. The main aim is, to be cheaper than F22 and offer the minimum 5th gen capabilities to deliver weapons, while AMCA now is planned with the same features like F22, or FGFA as well. It should get SC capability, TVC, should be super maneuverable and is twin engined as well. All this makes AMCA far more comparable to F22 and FGFA, than to F35!

If IAF would have the aim on a cost-effective 5th gen aircraft meant for the strike role, next to the air superiority fighter FGFA, the AURA UCAV would be the best choice. It has no focus on flight performance, has no expensive radar, or avionics, is single engined and can be produced in higher numbers because of the lower costs. All this just like F35 in the US forces!!!
The normal air defence roles that the F35 has to do for the US forces, will be taken over in IAF by LCA, MMRCA and MKI anyway, so that is no reason for AMCA either, just like it is not needed to replace other fighters, beauce all remaining Mig 27/29, Mirage 2000 and even Jags will be replaced in numbers by FGFA:

Upg Mig 27 - around 40
Upg Mig 29 - around 66
Upg M2K - around 51
Upg Jags - around 100

=> roughly 250 fighters, just like the minimum number of FGFA!

Not to mention that the AURA UCAV would be the better replacement of ground attack fighters like the Mig 27s and Jags. Another fighter is only needed when the MKI must be replaced, between 2035 and 2040, than a medium class fighter below the FGFA might make sense, but in that time we might see only UCAVs anymore, let alone the so called 6th gen fighters (whatever that means).

If we have to show our indigenous capabilities in this field, we should do it with some more operational sense behind it! Let the air force focus on LCA MK2 and further upgrades, next to FGFA. Cancel the useless N-LCA for the navy and develop N-AMCA for IAC2 in case a naval FGFA would be too big for the carriers.
Both forces would have a stealth fighter that suits their requirements and would have an indigenous fighter next to the foreign fighters as well. Our indigenous industry would have the time to fully develop LCA first and then switch to AMCA based on these developments. AMCA could be developed soly on IN requirements for a carrier fighter and wouldn't be a compromised re-design from the air force version. So a win-win situation for all and for the right reasons!
