NEW DELHI: India and the United States have agreed in principle to share military logistics, US defense secretary Ashton Carter said on Tuesday, as both sides seek to counter the growing maritime assertiveness of China.

Washington has been urging New Delhi to sign the Logistics Support Agreement that allows the two militaries to use each other's land, air and naval bases for resupplies, repair and rest.

But after years of dithering, the two sides said an agreement was in hand, although not yet ready for signing.

"We have agreed in principle that all the issues are resolved. We now need to finalise the draft," Carter said after talks with his defence minister Manohar Parrikar.

New Delhi has had concerns that the logistics agreement will draw it into a military alliance with the United States and undermine its traditional autonomy.
But Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration, faced with an assertive China expanding its influence in the South China Sea and into the Indian Ocean, has signalled its desire to draw closer to the United States. China is also a close ally of India's arch rival, Pakistan.

New Delhi is keen to access US technology for PM Modi's "Make in India" plans to build a domestic defence industrial base and cut expensive arms imports.
Carter said the two countries would also soon conclude a commercial shipping information exchange agreement.

This is direct support for India by the US which is supposed to be our ally. Not even a squeak by our politicians against it. I am extremely against the foreign policy Pakistan is following. It has no nationalism and there is no deal that weapons and equipment will not be provided by the US to India. The terrorism situation and other internal strife is making us forget how important it is to look after our foreign policy and ensure India does not get an upper hand against us diplomatically or militarily.

India likes to dither from logistics agreement to buying Rafales.

What is wrong with India signing the LSA which doesn't infringe on our sovereignty wrongly. I believe Pakistan should also do the same deal with US and Western countries as you have strategic location just on the border of middle East and CAR. Use it to your advantage. India has its own advantage which we would like take of.

Hasn't Pakistan already done that?

I thought finally a deal was signed. No, just in principles.

Well its differential treatment. US refused to sign a nuke deal the exact type it signed with India. If this is not vouching for disbalance of power in the region I don't know what is.

Firstly, your democratically elected government has NO say in foreign policy, which is controlled by the Army from Rawalpindi. With the Establishment calling the shots, should we be surprised at the situation Pakistan is in? No one takes you guys seriously anymore.

Secondly, the terrorism situation can only be solved if and when you go after the 'good' terrorists like the LeT and JeM who are banned by the UN but are still being used by the PA as their proxy army against India.

Thirdly, even if you have a sound foreign policy, do you for a moment think that the US will obey Pakistan's orders not to supply weapons/equipment to India? Seriously?

Is there a balance of power in this region ever?

The face value of such a deal is negligible as both forces were already enjoying base facilities. This deal just formalizes the structure and lays out an reimbursement policy on account basis instead of pay as you go ad hoc arrangement.

The value of this deal is in the symbolism and signalling. Now CISMOA is an another beast altogether, it would be interesting to see if India stonewalls or signs it.
