My personal experience about garbage in Sri Lanka...

I live in a city area in Sri Lanka but it's a green city. We had a garbage collecting issue some years ago. MC has introduced some bins but after some days garbage bins started moving! LOL People do not like to keep a garbage bin in front of their homes. So many reasons... it's ugly, it's stinky, stray dogs are making mess with it, we have little kids bla bla
Then MC removed all bins and started collecting garbage once or twice between 9am-11am in everyday, later they reduced it to 3 days to reduce the load they are collecting.

Rules in my area...
We can dispose garbage only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in a week
We have to hang it in front of our home or electric/telecom poles between 9am-11am

Only issue we have these days garbage collecting truck and short eats/food selling truck use same music, so it's difficult to understand which truck is coming...

Thanks for the community service announcement, are you applying for a waste management position at the Colombo Municipal Council?

I live in the CMC Metro area, for me there is a place I keep my garbage in 4 colored bins.

Black bin = General Waste
Yellow bin = Recyclable material.
Green bin = Biological waste
Red bin =Hazardous materials (Sump oil, car batteries, et.c)

The garbage man knows where it is, he comes and wheels the bins out and empties it on his truck. We give him a payment around 200 Rs each time he collects otherwise he drops shit everywhere and makes a mess.

They have just implemented that system here. Hope that cleans up the city.

MC in here has done some trick. first they collected garbage daily then they told they are collecting only specific days (Mon/Wed/Fri) Now people have a habit of managing garbage themselves at home automatically.
Now MC is introducing beautiful plants and flowers along the roads..it's another trick to change the mood of people. who wants to put garbage in a beautiful road??

Far as i know this system is implemented only in the greater Colombo area as of now.. @Skyline is from Kandy

Thats over simplifying things.. Wealth does not solve everything.. India has enough wealth but very little civic sense.. I'm not gonna look far.. But take Sri Lanka and Bhutan as an example.. Culture wise a lot of similarities and maybe a lot less wealthy than India.. But far ahead in terms of sanitation, Civic sense and overall order

Lanka for an example have a tradition of town planning, Waste management and sanitation that goes back thousands of years.. It's the law of the country that no building permit will be approved without proper sanitation/ Toilets etc

Yes one cannot compare the island to some of the more developed countries but in general society frown upon littering, And would think twice about dumping their garbage all over.. (Heavy fines by authorities do help the cause)

India is not wealthy by any definition. For every rich Indian there are atleast 100 poor Indians.

Civic sense and hygiene is non existent in this country, no wonder tourists are disgusted. @airpower183 besides Kerala you should've visited Goa too, the beaches over there are clean.

Probably.. But you need to accept that some aspects like the caste system is a major impediment for people to get out of the mind set of irresponsibility.. I have experienced first hand in India how even my friends who have gown up in western culture like Australia seem to think it's not his duty pick up garbage and it's ok to just throws things on the road.. Even been bought up in a third world country like Sri Lanka i was truly shocked to say the least

What does that have to do with religion though? That's a habit they have to break.

Please, don't need a lecture on anal hygiene . Using toilet paper isn't the only alternative. Most middle to high income Indian households would least have a bidet in place.



Phir bhi its alteast what 50 bucks a roll right? Me and you might be able to afford it, but not every Indian.

How does india have enough wealth? The lack of sanitation is a lack of resources for sanitation.

You are the one that is over simplifying.

I've been following all your posts, you have no idea about economics, commerce or the law.

First of all the legal system in India is almost defunct. If I have to appear to the court to make a fine payment 6 months after the deed, then it is an issue. Some of these issues can drag for years and I say common sense says giving the cop 200 bucks is better than battling it out in the court for 2 years.

One more thing I actually love the cattle on the roads.

Its a quite a nightmare for bike riders like me

The thinking is embedded into our mind, Can't be removed so soon. It has to be taught from generation to generation. Laton ke bhoot batoan se nahin manenge!!. If we make it strict like Singapore and install CCTV in streets where they threw garbage commonly, then collect penalty along with few days in lock up, then we may be able to change it. First start with metros!!

There are many Indian members who are anti-Sri Lankan and busy with opening many anti-Sri Lankan threads on PDF though you don't need put yourself to that level. I haven't seen Sri Lankan members are opening anti-Indian threads on PDF, Let's keep our Sri Lankan style that way!
