Highlights
  • Two sides are working to double the capacity of the Baharmapur-Bheramara line to 1,000 mw
  • There is a proposal to lay a third line from Assam's Bongaigaon to a suitable interconnect point in Bihar through Bangladesh

NEW DELHI: After turning power-surplus, India is working with Bangladesh on a plan to double the capacity of existing transmission interconnects and set up a third link for increasing cross-border electricity trade in a bid to widen the regional market as new generation capacities come up on both sides.

Sources said the two sides are working to double the capacity of the Baharmapur-Bheramara line to 1,000 mw and also examine the possibility of raising the Tripura-Comilla line's capacity to 200 mw. Also on the table is a proposal to lay a third line from Assam's Bongaigaon to a suitable interconnect point in Bihar through Bangladesh. Though the proposal is at a nascent stage, sources said a HVDC (high-voltage, direct current) line with a capacity of around 2,000 mw is being looked at.

The new line is expected to wheel power from hydel projects proposed to be built in the northeast, some of which can also be shared with Bangladesh. This line would allow an easy tap-in or tap-off facility for both countries to feed -or plug into -each other's markets.

According to the Asian Develop ment Bank, interconnected networks increase the operational efficiency and reliability of existing national grids and encourage the development of new renewable power resources.Besides Bangladesh, India also exports power to Nepal and imports from Bhutan. A wider regional market with easy export and import options will help balance the output swing from the 175 mw of solar power capacity being pursued by India.

The talks for enhanced interconnect capacity are well-timed with developments on the ground as power generation grew at more than 9% in the April-June 2016 period against the same period of 2015.

.
So ultimately India will start supplying BD with 1100 MW from 600 MW now?

.
now will our brothers to the east will be happy ??? or they will find some another pretext by Mr.Munshi to show india in bad light.

There is no point mate, no matter what you do there will always be someone who will hate you for no reason at all. I'm already accepting it as a fact that there will be enmity from other side regarding this.

i may have the answer to it, but even to me its a long stretch of fantastical imagination, hence i wont go that way.
its unfortunate that we , as indians, are still being looked at with all the suspicion u can get.

You think BD is getting electricity free?

.
Evil Chanakyan Yindoos are trying to give more electricity so that whenever needed, they'll stop supplying which will crash BD power grid.:devil::devil:

You've to dive into evil world of "Arthashastra" to get full picture of these subtleties. Its not so easy.Only true "Gyani" like MBI Munshi can unearth these.

when you dont have an item in the market, no matter how much money u have, u cant buy the item.
in this case the item is being home - delivered. u need us to arrange a thanking ceremony that u "accept" our power ?
btw, what are the other options that BDesh has, to import electricity, from nations other than india ?
are myanmar / indonesia valid options ?

Why do you care about every single one of them being happy?

There are plenty of India haters within India for starters....so why focus on those outside like Munshi?

Don't give him attention, he is a nobody. They have to churn against the BAL before they can get to India....so it makes them extra sad and frustrated.

This is simply another element of trade between two growing economies. No favours here.

Myanmar is certainly an option, not Indonesia. However, Bhutan and Nepal may be other two options. We will be watching if our Chanakkya Dada would be willing to give us corridor for that. BD cannot invest in power in those two countries unless the big Dada concedes to give us the connection through its land. Big Dada is a little miser without a trace of generosity.

Why should we be generous to you?

Our generosity is manifested through SHW and stability.

Don't whine about the hand that feeds you being without generosity.

Maybe we should have let PA complete its job for a few more years so fewer ungrateful whiners like you exist today.

India is producing only 200,000 mW of power when its population is a big 1,200 million, a paltry 160 watt/per Indian citizen. Same as with onions, Marwari India wants to pocket a few dollars by selling power to BD. In the process a wicked India is trying to engulf BD, which will be thwarted in the coming years.

Why should BD give India a power corridor through its northern neck when India doesn't give us the same for power to come from Bhutan and Nepal.

Very funny. India has power generation capacity of 302 GW with 1200 million people. BD has power generation capacity of 11-12 GW with 170 million population. Now laugh and laugh hard. lolz

BD imports because it has big demand and cash money for power. India sells because of its people's low purchasing power combined with its hunger for cash dollar. India's current production is a total of 1,55,969 mW on thermal, 39,788 mW on hydro power, and 4,780 mW of installed capacity on nuclear. So, the total is 200 gW, which is only 167 watt/person.
