India To Spend $6 Billion To Create New Forests

I can think of a better expenditure that could be foregone so your province can get funding for infrastructure. Its to do with many billions of dollars and France and a certain exorbitant deal....

6.3 billion on forest is money well spent.
The deal with France ensures maniacs and idiots around our nation do not slaughter our people !
And mind it , a poor in a strongly defended nation is in a better position , because otherwise he will not exist !

.
A fourth of the forest cover has burnt down because of the Forest Fire in the last few days. That money would have been well spent if in the past two years the govt. had spent it on buying equipments to put out forest fire and putting processes and procedures in place that would have prevented forest fire.

Still it is better than nothing. I just hope they do it before the Monsoon start so that the sprouts have enough time to grow. But since this announcement came this late, I doubt that.

People should be encouraged to plant trees. Tribals and people who live near the jungle need to be paid to plant trees and take care of them. Govt. needs to outsource it big time if they really want this plan to work.

I am not saying to stop. I am saying to slow down on it. 6 Billion is a big amount. A very big one.
It can add 3 Ultra Mega Power plants each with 4000 MW capacity , enough to take care of electricity needs of Jharkhand and North East.
Do these areas not deserve the right to develop ?
Perhaps it needs to be made clear that these funds are not separately provided. It was accumulated by making charges for factory which were built on forest land.

Dude, the problem is not that there is insufficient power. The problem is that the state electricity board has insufficient money to buy power.

Building power plants won't solve that, what needs to be fixed is the dilapidated systems in the state electricity boards.

Good, but choose the trees carefully. I mean which trees would be suitable for which environment etc. And taking care of trees after plantation is a huge problem and there is chance of siphoning of money. So must devise ways to guard against it.

One way shonky officials in China meet local forest cover quota is by growing unsuitable but fruit/nut producing trees to make money from. The problem with planting these trees is that they might not thrive in the local habitat or require much maintenance in terms of water and soil resources thus causing even more problems.

Everything has its budget dude

The word budget is all about spending within ones means.

Is India (a nuclear power) really in danger? In conventional arms India is safe from Pakistan. China is not an enemy, just a misunderstood neighbor.

Buying arms is good but buying arms at prices well well well above what they are actually worth is a waste.

Exactly, Re-forestation means study the old forest that was there before and not always think about money crops!!

These jets are going to replace the old jets, not to mention the Indian Industry will gain masively from the rafael deal

The main point is to use this money effectively. In Titlagarh (orrisa) which is the hottest place in India due to its unique topography - the afforestation campaign ended up in failure because the authorities chose wrong plants and plantation methods.

Better give the contract to professionals Indian or foreign rather than corrupt and amateur govt agencies.

While I agree with the idea of afforestation and nobody has more details about the proposed plan to make a definitive statement, I think the priorities are a little messed up.

The first priority should not be afforestation at all but to prepare the ground by stopping soil erosion brought on by ever more unpredictable monsoons - by building millions and millions of small bunds, check dams and micro dams which will also dramatically improve water tables. That will not only help local communities/farmers but also make planting trees that much easier, productive and cost effective.

Reverse the order and you are only going to pour all that money down the drain.

I did read that. And that's a very big amount. It needs to be pumped into our growth first.

The JSEB is not in a condition where it can not buy ,even 840MW from its own power plant.
The Patratu Thermal power plant is running only at 10% of its capacity for years due to old equipment , but no one has paid need to it.

A few millions is enough to revive that plant.

Further the debt ridden JSEB has only 2 power plants under it. Remaining small ones are others.
Further last year when JSEB approached NTPC for more electricity it was turned down saying there is no more left!

I don't think planting 10 million sapling is the wrong way forward. They will do more to stop soil erosion than any small bund and increase water tablet.

Planting 10 million saplings themselves is not wrong, but the areas that will be selected for afforestation typically and invariably suffer from drought like conditions and face the problems of soil erosion. And if no measures are taken beforehand, the saplings will soon wither away in the sun or get washed away in the run off. There was a joke around my school that we used to plant the sapling at the exact same spot every year.

Yes, the trees are very effective in stopping soil erosion but only after they are strong enough and have taken root.

You can check videos on afforestation efforts at Sadhana/Auroville Forest for more details.
