In a move to boost our India's water infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is putting his plan of developing 1,000 islands and 300 lighthouses across India, into high gear.
The Indian Government will entreat the Parliament for a positive go-ahead on a bill that will convert 101 rivers into waterways in order to develop these “tourist-friendly” islands and lighthouses.
The Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari told Business Insider India that Rs 50,000 crore will be allocated for the completion of this project which will be based on a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
"The government is planning to develop these waterways through the public-private partnership (PPP) mode, which is picking up after a slump," confirmed Gadkari.
He further added, “A pact between India and Bangladesh is also likely on transportation of goods through waterways between both nations during the PM's visit to the country."
Of these 101 waterways that await conversion, detailed project reports (DPRs) for 16 will most likely be finished this month. In addition, the Government will also establish 4 multi-nodal hubs at Varanasi, Haldia, Sahebganj and Kolkata, along the Varanasi-Haldia waterway.
The bill will also seek Parliament’s nod on shipbuilding yards and repair hubs to be set up in Andaman & Nicobar, Assam, and Kandla in Gujarat.
