India-Thailand difference delaying FTA under BIMSTEC

Is Sri-Lanka looking to join ASEAN? I think Bangladesh is trying to do something with ASEAN....Not sure how much will it work.

Actually Sri Lanka was offered a seat at ASEAN at it's inception, Sadly due to geo political upheavals, And domestic political failures it didn't materialize but now it's a full dialog partner

But i think current developments seems to be paving it's way, Successive SL govts since the end of the civil conflict have been pursuing the full membership of ASEAN more rigorously, For obvious reasons

Also for all intended purposes if you look at SL through the life style of it's people, Standards of living, Customs and general outlook of societies it's more South East Asian than South Asian, So there is a natural inclination to relate there as well

China has. Know your actual opponent if you are to stay in the game.

I am not sure if China can prop up Pakistan. pakistan growth in population will render the pakistani state impotent

BIMSTEC is an attempt by India to sideline Pakistan in the region nothing much else, As someone mentioned it's a gathering of some countries with little in common with, It's bound to fail

The reason that some of it's members are vying for the inclusion of China is because their apprehension of Indian domination of the body, To balance things off, That itself is a reason why it will remain even more toothless than SAARC

BIMSTEC is one of the manifestations of India's look east policy. It will fail because Myanmar is not exactly stable.

Sidelining Pakistan is not a difficult task given that Pakistan is not exactly interested in regional co-operation

Whether China is a member or not they stand to benefit if BIMSTEC is a success. It is not like China is clamoring to become a member

As an indian slave you are for BIMSTEC simply because it is indian initiative to establish its trade hegemony and minus China. There you have it, no need to hide your intention.

BIMSTEC is good for BD future. BD is at the central location of BIMSTEC. If someday there are more trades on land by trains and roads, BD will play very strong because all the routes are certainly going to go through BD. Oh!! I forgot. You guys do not want Indian freight to pass through BD. But, anyway. Do not you now think that BD will be benefited by BIMSTEC?

Why is ASEAN any better than SAARC ??

Why is ASEAN any better than SAARC ??

Any grouping has many purposes. One is trade through railways and roadways. For SAARC it is a dead wall because Pakistan will not allow goods from Indian and BD to move through its land to Central Asia and Iran. Unless Pakistan is willing to do so, SAARC will remain stuck in holding meetings year after year without getting any tangible results on many other issues as well.

. . .
Pretty obvious.. Look where ASEAN nations are with regards to development and look where South Asia is.. South Asians only know to gloat on predictions not actual results.. Sri Lanka made a major blunder when they didn't accept permanent membership of ASEAN

ASEAN is not any more functional than SAARC. Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos are quite poor. The prosperity is a function of enterprising Chinese minorities. It helps they avoid fighting each other and interfering in each other's internal affairs.

Your points on SAARC are valid. What economic initiatives does the ASEAN have ? ASEAN states are better than SAARC. it is for other reasons.

I know. We're kinda alone on this world. We have no country of or group of countries/organizatioon to rely on. Sad but we have to get used to it. I wish we could lobby hard enough to join ASEAN.

Yeah....that's why I see a bleak future for regional cooperation for BD.

Geography and ethnicity wasn't kind to you I guess.
Geographically we're in South East too. We border Myanmar. More South than South East but still South East. ASEAN isn't an ethnic group either...it's just we focused on SAARC because of good relation with India back then. Also Myanmar wasn't an ASEAN member when SAARC was formed. So we couldn't expect to join bypassing Myanmar. Myanmar only became an ASEAN member in 1997 and BD was already a SAARC member.

If it was going to fail, the Indians wouldn't have bothered with it. Or do the Indians lack forsight?

That may be the case back then.

If you take that Analogy, India is can also be a member of ASEAN. It has Andaman and Nicobar close to Indonesia.

I'm aware that it doesn't involve ethnicity. But now it looks more like a Mongoloid grouping with Myanmar in.

Also it's worth noting that Myanmar is not considered as a country in Indian Subcontinent.

Anyway, if you still have a membership request I think it will be considered but you haven't made any.
