Chinese submarines are welcome in Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean. The Chinese have many assets in the region, including in Sri Lanka and much of their oil is shipped through the region.

is this China counter-move tactic over India-Vietnam sugar diplomacy? what is the stage ove India supersonic missile deal with Vietname and the collectif call for the freedom of navigation in SCS? :cool:next India should come with their naval vessel to SCS to impress us....we will look forward for such encounter:lol:

Are you saying Sri Lanka needs foreign military presence in its territory to safegaurd its territorial integrity?

@Gibbs @samv

Your opinions

SL would be stupid to get involved in a middle of a power struggle.. It should handle foreign relations to balance whats best for the country. Both China and India have been steadfast allies to SL territorial integrity and sovereignty in the face of certain Western led attempts to destabilize in the recent years. There is no need to antagonize one over the other

South China Sea is not China's sea and Indian companies will explore Oil and natural gas no matter how much China protests, to make sure of this .;)

The policies of previous Indian governments (namely Congress) are one of the main reasons why China gained a foothold in South Asia and the Indian Ocean. Time and time again the Sri Lankan government wanted stronger defence ties with India, but because of Tamil Nadu, the Indian government did not take this up. They didn't want anything to do with Hambantota and building a port there. India even refused to sell offensive weapons to Sri Lanka to defeat the Tamil Tigers and at one stage even trained, armed and funded them (again done by the Congress government). Then they voted against Sri Lanka at the United Nations. This is how the Congress government thought it would 'play the game' with regards to Sri Lanka. Therfore, China cannot be blamed for holding out a hand of friendship and support to Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka cannot be blamed for reaching out to China.

It is a bit late to change things now. The Chinese presence is only going to grow in the region, and this is a positive thing as far as Sri Lanka is concerned. One can only hope current Indian government makes some policy changes and begins to take an interest in the region. So far, the BJP government has refused to listen to the shrill anti-Sri Lankan cries of Jayalalitha whilst the Congress would have folded and bent to her demands. With her going to jail, and with the BJP leading India one can only hope that Indo-Lankan ties will be taken to the next level, as they should have been a long time ago. Sri Lanka is obviously culturally, historically and linguistically closer to India... it is a shame that previous Indian governments have not thought it prudent to develop relations with the island.

"Slowly slowly they take over the illigal businesses in towns.. with only chinese language boards....they dont learn your language...even after 20 years in your country..they run prostition, happy ending massage centers, restaurants for only chinese people, cos they dont understand english and does not wants english speaking customrs. welcome to sri lanka 2014.."

this is what my sri lankan friend told me when asked about massive chinese investment in SL

You don't make enemies in your neighbourhood if you are as Tiny as Sri Lanka and your neighbour is India. Please learn from your past experience. You will loose men and face.

It's not Sri Lanka that is making enemies, it is India.

Sri Lanka has great relations not only with ALL its South Asian neighbours, but with China, Japan and SE Asia as well.

Your attitude is sort of what the Congress government had... which lead to more Chinese presence in South Asia. Try and change it for the interest of your own country.

It is up to us how we interpret your actions. Sri Lanka will get effected "a lot" if we feel threatened by a Puny Island Nation. Small players usually end up being used as cannon fodder in big power games.
