NEW DELHI: Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit was summoned on Wednesday at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi over “discourtesy” by authorities in Karachi who “cancelled an event where an Indian envoy was due to speak at the eleventh hour”.

“Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit was summoned today to the MEA and conveyed the concern of GOI by Secretary (West) on discourtesy to Indian High Commissioner,” a Ministry of External Affairs statement read.

Forget Kashmir, let’s talk trade: Indian envoy

“He was also conveyed our hope that our accredited diplomats in Pakistan will be allowed to discharge their normal functions without hindrance.”

The said event, organised by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), was scheduled for Tuesday (September 6), but was cancelled.

“Mr Gautam Bambawale, will visit the Karachi Chamber to meet office bearers and members on 6th September, 2016 at 3:15 pm,” the KCCI’s event invite read.

“We did not get security clearance for the event,” a Karachi Chamber spokesperson told The Express Tribune.

According to NDTV, Bambawale, who was on his first visit to Karachi after assuming charge in January this year, was told about the cancellation just half an hour before the event.

Islamabad rejects New Delhi’s claim on Kashmir

On Monday, the Indian envoy while speaking at the Karachi Council on Foreign Relations had said, “People living in glass houses should not be throwing stones at others”.

He called Kashmir an ‘internal matter’ of India. “There are problems in both India and Pakistan and you [Pakistan] should focus on resolving your problems before looking into the problems of other countries.”

According to sources, Bambawale’s comments on Kashmir “rattled the Pakistani authorities, prompting a cancellation”.

Let us withdraw each others missions. These mission have become useless and scapegoats for the other to vent anger on. Now expect Pakistan to summon Indian High Commissioner.

Many Pakistanis visit India for medical reasons....and this people-people conduit is an important one I feel since it occurs with genuineness and act of need and service.....which is fundamental to South Asian culture. So the high commissions are needed for this since they are the ones that provide the visas and also consular support.

Relations should not be left to pure govt-govt sphere. That is actually a dangerous thing to do for large neighbouring countries.

This will all just blow over as usual anyway...you wont even remember it soon. But destroying the high commission/consular system will leave a very big terrible void in relations that really need to be improved.

It is one of the rarest comments where I totally second you. We don't need diplomatic relations and between the two nations until and unless the issue of IoJ&K is solved.

Yes, until Kashmir is settled...nothing between India and Pakistan can move forward.

I guess visas can be arranged even with downgraded high commissions.

Just a way for Pakistani government/military to vent their impotent frustration.

GoP have started behaving like Twitter trolls.

High commissions to Pakistan and India by each of the two countries are there just to be summoned. It is a part of their work profile, isn't it?

On a serious note, I also believe that there is no need to keep high commissions, people to people contact, visa issues etc can be handled by a couple of consulates. This position is useless and just keep a high ranking foreign services officer on punishment duty.

Why would indians still want their ambassador to visit the event?

Sorry but your normal functions don't include telling lies shamelessly and lecturing Pakistanis in Pakistan.

you need diplomats to communicate and run normal visa functions

Yeah, an "internal matter" that they are settling by using pellet guns and blinding the Kashmiri people. Just compare the two valleys. One which is beset by violence, bloodshed and protests and the other where development is taking place at fast pace. Not a surprise that the Kashmiri people would rather opt for development as opposed to being blinded.

Since we never accepted Israel over the same principle stand which also applies to India and more so because we do not have a direct conflict with Israel but a moral one, on the other hand we have many with India yet it always baffled me as to why such hypocrisy displayed on our part when it comes to India? Pakistan and India cannot move along, we cannot co exist, we cannot do anything together at all, so why bother with having diplomatic staff at all. Close each others embassies or at the least downgrade them. I know Pakistan wont do it because of NS but India can take the lead. We will actually appreciate such efforts by Modi and India.

It never was their internal matter, no matter how much these modi indians try distorting the facts but they remain the oppressors.

while it may be Pakistan's prerogative as to who to appoint as its ambassador to india,I dont think Abdul Basit is doing a good job in maintaining a stable relation with India.

Discourtesy? To Indians? What discourtesy? Courtesy is for civilized people. And Indians? Come on, they are degenerative form of humen. What they are doing with humanity in Indian Occupied J&K reveals the disgustingly sick mentality of Indians. And these filthy animals are now claiming that others are discourteous with them.
