India still faces threat from Bangladesh

India still faces threat from Bangladesh - The Times of India

Nirmalya Banerjee, TNN | Oct 26, 2012, 11.12PM IST

KOLKATA: The Sheikh Hasina regime may have promised that Bangladeshi soil will not be allowed to be used for anti-India activities, but the situation might get reversed if there is a change in government in Bangladesh, warned former Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Veena Sikri on Friday. She advocated Indian policymakers to have "good relations with neighbours."

Addressing a seminar on conflicts in northeastern states organized by Research Centre for Eastern and North Eastern Regional Studies, Kolkata and Centre for Security Analysis, Chennai, she said the extensive business and commercial networks that underground groups from the northeast had built in Bangladesh remained largely intact, though important leaders like Arobindo Rajkhowa had been handed over to India. "Has the Bangladesh government destroyed the economic base of these insurgent groups?" she asked. She described how in the past the camps of these groups in Bangladesh used to run in collusion with Director General of Forces Intelligence and Inter Services Intelligence.

Pointing out that vested interests in Bangladesh were preventing transit facilities through their country as they considered the northeastern states as their captive markets and did not want Indian goods to reach there, she said India should make Bangladesh a partner in future plans for economic development of these states. To prevent illegal influx from Bangladesh, work permits should be introduced, she added, arguing that Bangladesh had prepared its own population register which it maintained strictly and had not allowed Rohingiyas to enter Bangladesh during recent ethnic violence in Myanmar despite international pressure.

Inaugurating the seminar, West Bengal governor M. K. Narayanan said "Ulfa-inspired insurgency is on the rise" in Assam and expressed concern at the strengthening of Muslim fundamentalist organizations. In Manipur, People's Liberation Army was networking with Maoists. Talking to TOI later, GOC-in-C Eastern Command Dalbir Singh said, however, that United Liberation Front of Asom had considerably weakened after its split in the pro- and anti-talk factions.

Analysing reasons for ethnic violence in the NE, former North Eastern Council secretary Falguni Rajkumar said control over land had become an important factor in assertion of ethnic identity. Religious conversions were also deepening ethnic divides. He also stressed on the need for a holistic approach to problems in the northeast.

BSF should be equipped with long range snipers and pinakas on the border :woot:

The way big mouth Indians were telling I thought Indian NE is already free of rebels. Alas, now even without BD support they are still moving around in the NE!! However, the Indian threat perception that BD is cladestinely supporting the rebels and that it has many training camps operating in its soil or the rebels are running businesses in Bd and sending this money to finance their organisation back in NE is a little away from the truth.

I have never heard anyone has seen these people in Dhaka or any other places. It is all Indian imagination. But, the article speaks the truth that there still is a rebellion in the NE. I feel India should allow the govts of the seven sisters to directly contact BD govt or organizations with regard to trade and business. Take a look at the NE. It is suffocating without economic development. BD is the only hope.

@ Good !! Good !! India is afraid of us :bounce::yahoo:

Threat perception is not exacly same as being afraid. Bd has also a threat perception from Burma, but BD is certainly not afraid of that country.

What BSF can do if NE people do not want to remain a part of India? Mian Bibi Na Raji to Kya Karega Kazi? Give the NE autonomy and let them negotiate and do trade with us without intervention from India Union govt.

@ A good news for me for the next 5 years.

@ In the true sense Indian Army had been fighting with these insurgents since 1947. Initially they fought with the Brigradier Lal Denga of Mizos. These MIzos were being openly armed by China and Pakistan. It was said that Pakistan Army used to train a Brigrade Strenght Mizos in Banderban. But this movement lost its impetus once Bangladesh got independance in 1971. The Indian KILO Force Commanded by General Uban at once moved towards Chittagong Hill Tract and evicted all the elements of Mizo insurgents. Later on Brig Lal Denga surrended to The Indian Security forces and signed a peace treaty. Soon, the problem arose in Monipur once India annexed it by force. Problem arose in Tripura, Assam and Meghalay. Most of these North East Insurgents are convertee Christians and some are Buddhas.

@ Why India is afraid of Bangladesh ????? It will always be there. After all we are a sovereign state. If India can make so many conpiracies against Bangladesh why not we ???? What ever we do ! for the very existance our country. It purely depandent's on Indian policy.

@ I donnot forsee any good future relation with India. So, long AWami Leaque is in power India may expect a little bit ????

Yes, she is talking without giving any evidence. Our dreaded DGFI is not like RAW, it may not have external activities. DGFI is busy finding out anti-govt people in the country. How it can train the ULFA rebels?
