Arrest of Indian diplomat in New York sparks U.S.-India tensions

The Indian government, furious about the rough treatment of a female diplomat arrested in New York last week, moved Tuesday to sharply rein in privileges of U.S. diplomats working in India, escalating a rare dispute between two normally friendly nations.

India took what a senior government official termed “reciprocal measures,” revoking the ID cards of U.S. Embassy personnel and their families, rescinding airport passes, freezing embassy imports and investigating salaries paid to Indian staff at consulates and as domestic help, as well as those teaching at U.S. schools. As a final slap, workers came to the street outside the embassy complex and removed concrete security stanchions.

one needs iota of self respect in oneself to take up a stand against unjust actions. India has shown that.

Removing security barrier, that is nothing but indian tamper tantrum. Why not indians and indian company announce they will not go to US or do business with US? That will be the spank.

3. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid says, "It is completely unacceptable... We have put in motion what we believe will be an effective way to address this issue and protect her dignity... Everything that can be done, will be done."

5. Senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha says: "The media has reported that we have issued visas to a number of US diplomats' companions. Companions means they are of the same sex. After the Supreme Court ruling, it is illegal in our country, just as paying fewer wages is illegal in the US. So why doesn't India arrest all of them?"

6. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde refuses to meet a visiting US Congressional delegation. BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi says he too has refused to meet the delegation.

These are just bunch of typical BS for public consumption during election time, so congress can act tough. Why not indians and indian company announce they will not go to US or do business with US?
Lets see if this is for real.

On the other side, US can take any number of action and india will be looking for escape. Reducing H1B visa from india to 0, would be good starting point.

Lets see how it plays out

All said and done, she is an Senior Diplomat, and there norms and protocols in place to deal with any issues. what the USA did is not acceptable, you do not arrest and handcuff a Diplomat, if she did break any law it has to dealt according to Geneva convention, local police or NY DA is not part of that !!

you can not stop business between countries even if they go to war. retalliation is only at the diplomatic level.

India 'spanks' US. Are you crazy?

yes it looks like that. it is in all international media now

India is in "war" mode or acting out that way. So why indians and indian companies feel so strongly for "diplomat" who ran slave business, are not announcing they will not go to US?

That is where "hypocrisy" or "limitation" whatever you call it are exposed. If US choose to take next step of retaliation, india will be running for escape. Or if you think otherwise, let us know what would india do to counter potential retaliatory action from US?

"Spanks"? Sounds like a pretty strong word.

Anyway it will be interesting to to see if this escalates, and if the US retaliates back.

@Aeronaut, @Zakii - there are a few threads already running on this - there's nothing new here - why not merge this with them? besides, it's a fake title.
