India and Russia are likely to sign several high profile defence agreements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Moscow for his annual summit with President Vladimir Putin. The deals include a mega contract to acquire S-400 anti-ballistic missile systems at a cost of around Rs 70,000 crores, top sources in the Defence Ministry said.

Mr Modi is likely to visit Moscow immediately after the winter session of Parliament, most probably on December 24-25. Other defence deals, which may on the table include the purchase of 48 Mi-17V5 attack helicopters for the IAF and 50 Kamov multirole choppers for the Indian Navy. Talks to lease one more nuclear submarine from Russia seems to have hit the road block. “We are no more considering to lease the nuclear submarine,” said a top level naval official.

The Russians had offered Kashalot K-322 nuclear power submarine of project 971 Shchuka to India and the talks were going on for some months. Indian Navy is already operating a Nerpa class Russian nuclear-powered submarine ‘INS Chakra,’ which it leased from Moscow in 2012 for ten years. The Indian Navy operated a Russian nuclear submarine for ten years back in the early 1980s.

The Russians have offered to upgrade the submarine based on Indian requirements and promised to handover the charge of the vessel in 2018 after the repair, upgrade and testing work and the Indian crew’s training are completed. The official would not say why the talks for leasing submarine is not fructifying. However, deal for S-400 missile system said to be firmly on track.

The modalities, including the price of deal and number of systems to be acquired, were agreed upon during the meeting of India-Russia Inter Governmental Commission on Military-Technical-Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC) which was co-chaired by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in the first week of last month.

So, both China & India gonna field S-400 at each other?!! LOL! Putin has some pure dark sense of humor!:D
Also - China gets Su 35 and India gets Su 30.
China makes copies of SU's and gets engines to sell to Pakistan and other nations
India gets to manufacture stuff with Russia for 5th gen aircraft.

Putin is the regional arms super market!

India cant afford such costly Air defense. India can focus on the local BMD which is 2 layered defense comprising of AAD-PAD/PDV. The acquisition of S-400 should be conditional to some kind of tech transfer otherwise, its big loss for India

You forgot to add Russia is selling Pakistan Mi-35 attack helicopters. So it's possible China-India-Pakistan will use Russian weapons on each other. :omghaha:

Not very dissimilar to the US offer of F16 Blk 60 to India while supplying the exact same fighters (of course, slightly older blocks) to Pakistan. Same story with Harpoons, C130's and several others.

Good.Additional frigate deals will also be signed.

Are we crazy to buy frigates from russia while we can make them cheaply at home.
India should ask Russia to give us more access to Su30 components,sub-system. With 50% serviceability Su30 usage is question mark for Indian air froce

It has some interesting facts.

India has already leased one Akula to give protection to INS Vikramaditya.

Since INS Vikrant is being completed by 2018, India was looking for another Akula to join it by 2018 and protect.

Russia had offered 971 Shchuka to be completed by 2018, But if Indian Navy is no longer consider that option, it can only mean Indian Navy has found another nuclear Submarine to join the INS VIkrant carrier group by 2018, and that submarine can only be INS Arihant. :yahoo:

It also confirms that the speed of the INS Arihant is in the excess of 30 knots to keep up with the carrier group. :azn: So Arihant will probably be an SSGN.

Their was also noise regarding purchase of 2 more Kilos
probably instead of another Akula

Anyone has update on that

I guess second Arihant is supposed to be inducted around that time frame.

You mean INS Aridhaman ? It is suppose to be already complete and is in final stages. It will probably be launched in the next few months. Certainly by 2016.

However it will be MUCH larger than Arihant since it will carry 8 K-5 and is a proper SSBN. So its unlikely it will escort the Carrier group.

Arihant on the Other hand fits the role perfectly. It can carry upto 12 Cruise missile of K-15 long with torpedoes that makes it ideal for carrier escort.

So you mean that another sub of the size of Arihant (6000 tonnes) is in construction for carrier escort role, or the original Arihant is supposed to do that job?
