India sends the most number of illegal migrants to UK?

London: India is among the top five countries named as the hub of illegal migration to the UK. Nigeria, Pakistan, China, and Bangladesh are the other countries named by the UK Home Office as the hub of illegal migration, according to a report in the Daily Mail. It claims that a latest Home Office study reveals a "robust estimate" of 863,000 illegal migrants living in the UK, 70 percent of whom are believed to be based in London. Reuters. Their origins have been deduced based on the nationalities of people detected by the authorities. Britain's Immigration Minister Mark Harper blamed the problem on "uncontrolled immigration" over the years under the Labour government and stressed the Tory-led coalition was determined to get "tough on illegal immigration". The latest figures come from the London School of Economics and are included in a study titled 'Practical Measures for Reducing Irregular Migration'. The analysis also reveals that around 10,000 foreigners who had no legal right to live in Britain have been granted permission to stay under a provision that allows a migrant who has lived in the UK for 14 years the right to abode. The British government has come under repeated attack for failing to get a grip on Britain's mounting backlog of immigration cases. Recently, it was reported that Capita, a company awarded a contract by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) worth up to 40 million pounds to track down more than 174,000 immigrants who may be living illegally in Britain, may have been wrongly pursuing people who have the right to stay in the UK and others who left long ago. The UK's immigration problems are also set to multiply as Bulgarians and Romanians will gain the unrestricted right to live and work in Britain from December 2013, when temporary curbs imposed in 2005 to protect the British labour market within the European Union expire. Prime Minister David Cameron has insisted the country will demand new restrictions to keep out benefit tourists as it fears a tidal wave of EU immigrants from next year. PTI

UK faces Illegal Indian immigration problem

London: The Punjabi suburb of Southall in west London was at the centre of a BBC sting operation, which revealed a network of illegal immigrants from India. Later, two Indians were caught illegally entering the UK in an army lorry from Kosovo.

Member of Parliament, Ealing and Southall, Virendra Sharma says tackling illegal immigration will require intensive monitoring.

“I think it’s important to find out how many they are, what is their living standard here, and what kind of work they do. I’m not supporting illegal immigration, I’m saying those who are illegally here should be dealt with as per the law,” Sharma says.

But that's easier said than done, as there are many links in this chain.

Illegal immigrants, especially those from India, use different routes to enter the UK. While some come via the EU countries on lorries or boats, others simply overstay their visas. Once in the UK they meet the middlemen who provide them with fake passports and forged identities.

There are some landlords who take them on as tenants. Then they seek employers who are willing to hire them at very low wages. So although hidden, this operation seems to have its unique structure and organisation.

“The illegal immigrants are doing this for their own purposes. It is a close-knit community, which is very hard to crackdown upon,” says immigration lawyer Tony Shergill.

But the government is talking tough. Under the new immigration plans announced in February, employers will be held accountable for hiring foreign workers. Huge penalties will be imposed on businesses that break the rules.

In addition, local immigration teams are to be formed by 2012 to monitor and prevent employers from hiring illegal workers. Introducing biometric visas and stricter border controls are also some of the measures, the government hopes, will help tackle the problem.

UK to clear slums with illegal Indians

London: It looks like something which could be seen in the hit film Slumdog Millionaire.
But these shocking images —which show garden sheds and garages transformed into dodgy homes for immigrants — are not from the slums of Mumbai. Incredibly, they are from a west London suburb.

According to The Sun, the sheds in Southall have been built by rogue landlords, who are cashing in on newcomers to the country.

They are completely hidden from view from the street and are a clear breach of strict planning laws.

Illegal immigrants have made some of the tiny shacks their homes, some of which are highly dangerous.

Rats and cockroaches roam around the units, while others have poor wiring and sanitation.

Others are adorned with flat-screen TVs, power showers and central heating.

Sukhvinder Singh, who is originally from the Punjab in northern India, shares a shed with three others for £500 a month in Southall Green.

An Indian laborer, who arrived in Britain on a student visa, told The Sun: “I’m here to work. If I wanted to study I could have stayed in India.”

Sukhvinder told how if the council raided the shed where he pays rent then there are “a thousand other places like this we can stay in.”

He also adds how he thinks rogue landlords flout planning rules. “You just have to say you’re building a shed for tools. Once you’ve got the doors on, you can do what you like.”

Another immigrant says how he had been there for nine years and had never had a visit from the council.

It is believed there are 10,000 similar shacks in London and the Home Counties.

Many people, who live in them, are cash-in-hand manual workers, who pay no tax.

A man claiming to be the landlord told the newspaper how he was currently building a shed at the bottom of his garden. He had built another five years earlier and charges £40 per person per week.

“It’s up to you how many tenants you put in,” he said. “I’ve had no problems from the council — not yet. You just say you are building a garage.”

The Housing Act states that council officers must give 24 hours’ notice before visiting properties.

This means evidence of people living in the garages and sheds can easily be removed, which has led to criticism of the system by some Ealing councilors.

Illegal Immigrants from India Stream Into US From Mexico

Hundreds of undocumented immigrants from India are taking an unusual route to the United States, illegally crossing from Mexico into Arizona to seek political asylum

Those numbers are likely to rise in 2014, the head of a D.C.-based Asian immigrant rights group told Newsmax on Tuesday.

Deepa Iyer, executive director of South Asian Americans Leading Together, said "it's not clear" why immigrants from India are using the same route as Central Americans.

One reason may be that many South American countries don't require visas, Eleanor Sohnen, a policy analyst at the Migration Policy Institute, a D.C.-based think tank, told the Arizona Daily Star. Many can pay up to $35,000 to be smuggled into the country.

Some Indians simply surrender at Nogales, Az., while others are caught by Border Partrol and detained.

Iyer said the U.S. immigration system is broken and desperate immigrants don't want to waitfive to 10 years to join loved ones in the United States, while others have fled India, a country of 1.2 billion people, claiming political persecution.

U.S. asylum officers must determine whether their claims are credible. Some are set free but must show up at an immigration hearing at a later date, while others remain in detention, the Arizona Republic reports.

Some immigrant advocates are concerned that Indians are being robbed and physically harmed by smugglers during their multi-country journey to the United States, or are preyed on by unscrupulous employers once they get here.

Some border-security advocates think human smuggling gangs being used by Indians to get to the U.S. could also become pipelines for terrorists.

"They will smuggle anyone who pays them," Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington, D.C., think tank, told the Republic.

About 3.4 million South Asians from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives live in the United States, according to South Asian Americans Leading Together.
