Exclusion from India's entry-level market would hurt Xiaomi and its peers, which in recent years have increasingly relied on India to drive growth while their home market endures a series of Covid-19 lockdowns that crippled consumption.

The move coincides with concern about brands like Realme and Transsion undercutting local companies.

This could be BJP/RSS Strategy to prevent poor OBC SC ST and Muslims from owning Good smartphones, capable of using social media and youtube. There are no brands that can replace Realme and Transsion, and there won't be. @jamahir @xeuss
Xiaomi had so many features for low price, it didn't even need marketing. I bet it was government subsidized and sold at a huge loss to aggressively capture market, look at the baniya Manu Kumar Jain, taking credit for it. He makes it sound it was his brilliant strategy that worked.

India seeks to restrict Chinese smartphone makers from selling devices cheaper than 12,000 rupees ($150) to kickstart its faltering domestic industry, dealing a blow to brands including Xiaomi Corp.

The move is aimed at pushing Chinese giants out of the lower segment of the world's second-biggest mobile market, according to people familiar with the matter. It coincides with mounting concern about high-volume brands like Realme and Transsion undercutting local manufacturers, they said, asking not to be identified discussing a sensitive matter.

Exclusion from India's entry-level market would hurt Xiaomi and its peers, which in recent years have increasingly relied on India to drive growth while their home market endures a series of Covid-19 lockdowns that crippled consumption. Smartphones under $150 contributed to a third of India's sales volume for the quarter through June 2022, with Chinese companies accounting for up to 80% of those shipments, according to market tracker Counterpoint.

Xiaomi's shares extended losses in the final minutes of trading in Hong Kong on Monday. It slid 3.6%, extending their decline this year to more than 35%. It's unclear whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government will announce any policies or use informal channels to convey its preference to Chinese companies, the people said.

New Delhi has already subjected Chinese firms operating in the country, such as Xiaomi and rivals Oppo and Vivo, to close scrutiny of their finances, which has led to tax demands and money laundering allegations. The government has previously employed unofficial means to ban Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. telecom equipment. While there's no official policy prohibiting Chinese networking gear, wireless carriers are encouraged to purchase alternatives.

The move shouldn't affect Apple Inc. or Samsung Electronics Co., which price their phones higher. Representatives from Xiaomi, Realme and Transsion didn't respond to requests for comment. Spokespeople from India's technology ministry also didn't respond to Bloomberg News inquiries.

India amped up pressure on Chinese firms in the summer of 2020 after more than a dozen Indian soldiers died following a clash between the two nuclear-armed neighbors on a Himalayan border. It has since banned more than 300 apps, including Tencent Holdings Ltd.'s WeChat and ByteDance Ltd.'s TikTok, as relations between the two countries fray.

Homegrown companies such as Lava and MicroMax comprised just under half of India's smartphone sales before new entrants from the neighboring country disrupted the market with cheap and feature-rich devices.

Chinese smartphone players now sell the vast majority of devices in India, but their market dominance has not been "on the basis of free and fair competition," India's junior tech minister told the Business Standard newspaper last week. Recurring annual losses posted by most Chinese handset makers in India, despite their leading position, add to criticism of unfair competition.

In private, the government continues to ask Chinese executives to build local supply chains, distribution networks and export from India, suggesting New Delhi still very much wants their investment, the people said.

.
Its a move to protect Indian companies.

FZpN4iiUEAAaTO1

. .
Dumb move if not for the phones most of the internals will be sourced from China the cycle of dependency continues. Sanghis have lost it.

.
So worse phones for same amount of money. Consumers are going to be really happy.

. .
The most recent Apple Supplier List shows 9 of the company’s top suppliers are based in India
Apple's biggest supplier is China. China is the world's largest manufacturer of goods and it isn't going to change any time soon.

. .
Chin should move the manufacturing to Pakistan and Bangladesh. Also not to forget Sri Lanka.

.
Thank you. India

These Sanghi idiots don't have any clue to make phones themselves, they import Chinese-made subassemblies and make phones out of those.

In fact the garbage phones they make (Karbonn etc.) are such bad quality (housings will crack like a cracker if twisted), they can't even compete neither in price nor quality with Bangladeshi phones, forget Chinese ones. The Indian $hit phone reviews are all over the Internet.

And now they banned Chinese phones, as if that will make Indian phones competitive.

The reason four out of five smartphones in India are Chinese brands says it all.

Chin should move the manufacturing to Pakistan and Bangladesh. Also not to forget Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh already has assembly for most Chinese brands including Oppo and Realme. Pakistan also has quite a lot of assembly.

Currently, 12 companies have the license to manufacture mobile handsets in Bangladesh. They are Walton Digi-tech Industries Ltd, Fair Electronics (Brand- Samsung), Edison Industries (Brand- Symphony), Alamin and Brothers (Brand- 5 Star), Carlcare Technology BD Ltd (Brands- Itel and Techno), Anira International (Brand- Yunstar), Best Taicool Enterprise Ltd (Brand- Vivo), Grameen Distribution (Brand- Lava), Banglatrinic Technology (Brand- DTC), Benley Electronic Enterprise (Brand- Oppo), Okay Mobile and Mycel Technology.

Proud Indians would starve themselves a month in order to buy a new Chinese phone.

India is rated way lower in global hunger index compared to Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Then, Ban is Coming Soon for Indian Products.

I have been saying this for a long, long time.

It is time all D-8 countries agree to ban Indian products as they are virulently anti Muslim.

If China bans their garbage as well, where will they sell their sub-par items? Maybe only Africa.

Times will be tough.

So worse phones for same amount of money. Consumers are going to be really happy.

Worse phones for MORE money.

They don't make any phones from scratch in India - all are made from Chinese sub-assemblies/parts imported from Shenzhen and other Chinese factories. If China stops supplying parts or raises parts prices, then their phone prices will go way higher.

They hardly make any phone parts in India.

Moreover - their businessmen are incapable of manufacturing anything efficiently. Always looking for shortcuts, not paying real wages and never investing in modern efficient production processes.

Even if they sell the products in Africa it would be competing against Chinese goods which are better quality and reasonably priced.
I bought something from Amazon, on the Amazon description page about the Origin: India. When I opened the package, it printed clearly on the box "Made in China."

Sanghis here being excited about iPhone 14 and some Tata factory making circuit jumpers and connectors.

How many Indians do we know that can afford iPhone 14 ? Or any other iPhone model ?? Maybe one percent ?

These things are expensive.

Thank You Modi for dragging India down even further down the abyss.

India can't make any tech item with any quality.

How many of your people can even afford a basic smartphone? Your annual smartphone sales in 2020 were 6.8 mn while it was 150 mn in India .

Bangajihadis should not talk of tech when your most advanced product is underwear and that too made with imported cotton from India.

We got to start somewhere. Government is about to give subsidies to fab and semiconductors manufacturing in India. Will be easy to create an internal demand for these new investments if a good enough chunk of smartphone market is controlled by Indian companies whose funding eventually be given by loans from state owned banks.... The government will have a say.

We got to start somewhere, even 1% localisation is better than 0.

Apple's biggest supplier is China. China is the world's largest manufacturer of goods and it isn't going to change any time soon.
The aim is not to overdo or beat China , the aim is that whatever internal consumption is there, if possible substitute it with local manufacturing.

And anyways the trade between India and China is lopsided, if they take counter steps, will push the government to get the supply lines in India itself on a priority.
