The US Department of Defense has notified the Congress the sale of 145 state-of-the-art 155mm towed Howitzers to India worth about USD 885 million. The Indian Government has requested a sale of 145 M777 155mm light-weight towed Howitzers with laser inertial artillery pointing systems (LINAPS), warranty, spare and repair parts, maintenance, and training equipment, the Department of Defense said in a notification.
The estimated cost is USD 885 million, it said.

"This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to strengthen the US-India strategic relationship and to improve the security of an important partner which continues to be a for political stability, peace, and economic progress in South Asia," theSecurity Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a statement this week.

The Congress was notified on August 2.

India intends to use the Howitzers to modernise its armed forces and enhance its ability to operate in hazardous conditions, DSCA said, adding that India will have no difficulty absorbing these weapons into its armed forces.

It's actually a British product, the M777 Howitzer was developed by BAE. Also you are receiving the most basic variant of the M777 variants, so you won't be given the additional precision assist technology. As for India's procurement apparently that's been delayed by Indian defense budget it as reported.

How 14,000-crore budget cuts will affect Indias armed forces

It's called the Indian tax ;)

As usual western countries including their "ally" Russia all take advantage of this desperate country seeking arms. The price India paid for these 145 Howitzers is extremely over priced. The US procured ~85 M777 Howitzers from BAE for $176 million-- far less in unit per cost than what India is paying. It's so amusing to watch as UK, France, "ally" Russia, and now US take financial advantage of this desperate third world country they know will buy anything at any price. It's also funny to watch Indian's justifying the $885 million price tag they just payed by talking about spare parts...

Can you get a customer any better than India? :omghaha: I guess it's the price you pay for being "Incredible" you pay incredible price.

The usual dumb@ss trolls have descended here - bye bye thread.

I am sure these would be put against Chinese in the mountains but amazing to see that IAF didn't deployed their Su-30s and Jaguars there...

maybe you need to read the links before you post them. That link is a Feb 11th report and this article is about an august update to the US congress. So the delay period is taken into account. where did you you read about India getting a basic package .

What kind of "think tank" are you?? This "budget cut" nonsense was debunked many moons ago. What budget cuts? The FY2013-14
Indian defence budget INCREASED by ~5%!!!

The M777 was developed by the US arm of BAE which for all intents and purposes acts indepandtly of the UK-based European arm of BAE systems. The arty system is British in name only. Not a single peice has even been bought by the UK army!! All the training, spares, logistics etc will be coming from the US and US army. The sale is being done through the FMS route from the USG!!

And FYI the M982 GPS-guided Excalibur round is part of the package!

NATO countries get it cheaper than non NATO countries. However - Australia just bought 19 for $70 million.

And the original deal for 145 was $660 million for India. http://www.firstpost.com/india/boom-india-in-660-m-deal-for-us-howitzers-aimed-at-china-306994.html

So yeah the new deal has a lot more spare and ammo and life cycle purchases added on to it.

so yeah - sorry they did not sell it to India for the price of those tin cup J-17's . well then again India can afford to buy superior products ...while you guys  I guess you can ask IMF for some more loans. Have not's should not post about the Have's w/o the proper information.
