India police charged with murder of 20 suspected sandalwood smugglers

Police in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh have been charged with the murder of 20 suspected red sandalwood smugglers, an official said.

The head of the anti-smuggling task force whose officers are accused of the crimes said they acted in self-defence after being attacked by men armed with axes, sticks and stones last week in the remote forest of Chittoor, which is notorious for sandalwood smuggling.

An initial case was filed with police based on a complaint by the wife of one of the victims, charging “unknown persons” in the force with murder and abduction.

“Her [victim’s wife] complaint was that the anti-smuggling task force kidnapped and murdered her husband,” Kranthi Chaitanya, a member of a civil rights group representing the victim’s family, told AFP.

It was not immediately clear how many police officers were being charged with carrying out the attack.

Street protests and growing calls for an independent investigation erupted last week over the killings, with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) calling the incident a “serious violation of human rights”.

Three witnesses told the NHRC on Monday that the men were hauled off a bus and shot while in custody.

Indian police have long been criticised for so-called “encounter killings”, in which they shoot suspected criminals to sidestep court procedures and then claim the victim fired first.

The supreme court ruled last September that police killings must be investigated by an independent agency or a police unit not involved in the case.

The red sandalwood that grows in southern India is highly sought after in neighbouring China and other parts of east Asia, mainly for making furniture.

India banned its sale in 2000 after the tree was placed on an endangered list, but illegal logging is rampant.

Activists accuse police of targeting low-level workers in the forests, while the heads of organised criminal networks behind the smuggling often go unpunished.

How's killing smugglers a problem?

They are destroying national wealth, regardless of whatever state.

.
I hope this case does not deter the police from shooting down more smugglers and poachers. No mercy must be their motto.

Catch the smugglers. Punish them by putting in prison.

It is not national wealth. It is unlikely someone in UP will ever benefit from state forest land in AP.

Police's job should be catch the smugglers and poachers. Find out who is buying those stolen goods.
It is the role of the courts to dispense justice

Let me explain why killing smugglers is a problem,

1 - they were "suspected" not proven smugglers
2 - Police is not supposed to play jury, judge and executioner roles
3 - Even if they were found guilty of smuggling by a competitive court, they would have been awarded the punishment as per Indian Criminal Code, which, as far as I know is not death penalty.
4 - If the court can't award death penalty for the blames crime, then how could police do it?

It is national wealth. Anything in India is national wealth. Just like the coal mines of Jharkhand generate economy, jobs and power for a variety of state workers (not just biharis or UPites but also other states work forces), the sandalwoods of AP are as important to you, us, and every Indian.

They attacked the police.

Most TN politicians or any regions politicians are involved in such cases so that they can raise a 'discrimination' issue for their objective.

Lets kill every criminal on our own, justice will be served immediately. Why to wait for court's order? We can dismantle the judiciary system of India.

Aren't you an LTTE supporter and a Kashmir separatist supporter? Well I do not see why India has to abide by rules when obviously a lot of Indians do not.

I hate to say this but sometimes i think what a fvcked up peoples tamils are. They think they are some sort of special peoples who can murder, loot and do any shit to non tamils. Hell, they even want to release the killers of our prime minister since they are tamils. Last year, they want not to punish a person who raped and killed a malayali girl. Tamil sentiments, by foot..

I am against people who are getting oppressed anywhere, be it my own tamil race or kashmiri. My own brother who is in Indian Army was deployed in various places in kashmir valley, through him i came to know people in the regions of Baramullah, poonj, etc etc wont even say the word India. So i say, India simply dont have the right to keep the people of these regions under her umbrella just because someone signed accession with India. Keep Jammu and Ladakh since many are hindus/buddhists leave the rest to decide their fate.

On topic: Thats what even i had said, why we have to abide by rules?. Judiciary not required.

I agree with you. I feel oppressed by people like you who work for the disintegration of my country. Hence anything that will oppress you will be welcome to me.
