India needs to ally with US to counter China: Fareed Zakaria to India Today at Davos

There's been a lot of delusion going on in this thread about "balancing" China, and especially foolish posts stating that China couldn't attract allies. Let me administer a dose of reality: allies are gotten by strength. Small and weak countries ally with those that can protect them and they have zero sense of loyalty, only a strong instinct for self-preservation and a very short memory. Today, that protector is the United States; tomorrow, it won't be. As China's power grows, all of America's allies (yes, even Japan) will jump ship and defect to China. They have to, because the first ones that do will obtain an enormous advantage over their regional rivals.

A certain weeb who shall go unnamed fantasized about Vietnam reaching a trillion dollar GDP. Well, he'll have to wait a quarter of a century for that to happen. I hope he's patient. Meanwhile, China's GDP will by then be at least 35 trillion USD (nominal, likely 50+ trillion by PPP).

You do not understand geopolitics and China's utter lack of cultural attraction.

Think why Superpower Soviet Union had next to no real allies.

lol @ Japan allying with China.

Still geography has been somewhat kind to Vietnam as the country is long north to south and short east to west.
The border between Vietnam and China is 1280Km long and it is at an altitude of 500m to 2000m. This will mean that China cannot really attack with mass armoured columns all along the border.
They do. Sure, Vietnam border terrain is difficult but it is not like Himalaya mountain. We haven’t natural barriers. It’s every time the same. Chinese army usually attack the entire front of 1,000 km with three pincer movements: Lao cai, Cao bang and Loc Binh. Their aim is to encircle and break thru Vietnamese defense lines that are concentrated in that areas. The Chinese participate, should Vietnam positions been overran, the way to Hanoi is free. The terrain is flat. Vietnam strategy is to hold Chinese army as long as possible giving time to build up the second defense line before the capital. Should Hanoi been captured, the third defence line is built up behind the capital and so forth.

India already allies with America to contain China. However, America won't do anything for India. So far, only China has been willing to invest in India.

No, I'm afraid it's you who does not understand geopolitics and much else. Do you think Japan is allied with America because of its "cultural attraction", or because America destroyed two of its cities with nuclear bombs and firebombed the remaining "teeming bamboo ant-heaps" into ash piles? Is that an "alliance" or a conquest?

I don't need to think about the Soviet Union because the Soviet Union was a failure. China is not a failure, it is a success unprecedented in history. Spend less time "loling" and more time educating yourself on history and the principles of geopolitics.

Yeah, see, the problem for you is that this was before China had a navy. The sh*t you're in is much deeper these days, I'm afraid - unless you make the right choices. But sadly, your little country has a long history of making poor choices.

India has always dominated middle kingdom. Its our destiny. It will be a multi polar world in a couple of decades. U.S. China Russia India and E.U. .

Yes and you need a dose of reality if you think the Japanese will ever kow-tow to China.
USA case was first due to total defeat in WW2 and also because they needed US to develop their economy.
Neither of those two cases apply in China's case.
Now the relationship is due to mutual benefits.

India needs to ally with US to counter China: Fareed Zakaria to India Today at Davos
January 26, 2019
India’s economic growth has not lived up to the mark in terms of sustained economic grow foreign affairs analyst Fareed Zakaria told India Today TV at the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

When asked about India’s global image as an emerging economy, Zakaria said, "The world, think, has viewed India for the last few years as a disappointment."

same is true for any super power..look at USA ..it has strong allies all over the world..one area where china needs to work..it has to find allies in asia and in africa if it can..but it lack allies in asia and is virtually surrounded by enemies..apart from weak pakistan and allaying/dying Russia

Chinese rather commit suicide than ally with everybody. Military alliance is not for them. Chinese consider non-Chinese as barbaric people. Primitive.

Some people are just too dense to learn, and I'm starting to think you're one of them. If you understood just the basics of geopolitics you'd know better than to use the word "ever." Still, I'll try. You think Japan's current relationship with America is due to "mutual benefits" and not, for instance, due to:

Alright, I'll indulge you and ignore the history. Japan is allied with the United States today principally for protection from powerful neighbouring countries, foremost among them China (but Russia and Korea also apply). What will happen to that calculus once China becomes powerful enough to militarily crush the US in Asia? Or, even sooner, once it's able to inflict damage the US considers unacceptable? Once Japan understands that the US is no longer an adequate protector, what then? Will it still maintain its alliance with America because it really likes Terminator movies or some other cultural factor?

Or will it find some way to swallow its pride and line up behind China before, say, Korea does?

Chinese rather commit suicide than ally with everybody. Military alliance is not for them. Chinese consider non-Chinese as barbaric people. Primitive.
Well, in your case, who could blame them?

The Chinese hate Vietnam bottomless because we look Chinese, speak Chinese, behave Chinese but refuse to become Chinese. They hope we are helpless like the Jews so they can put us in gas chambers.

Someone needs to check their heads if there is a brain cancer.

The old script for Vietnamese was Chinese-based....but the language itself is austro-asiatic family right? It sounds very different to sinitic spoken chinese wouldn't you say? I can instantly pick out Vietnamese when its spoken, it sounds very different to any other language I've heard.

Well it has all resurfaced due to 1979 war (and context of that) in their case.

Viets will never forget or forgive China for that....given Vietnam war ending could have been a fresh start given the pan-communist aid (even through the thick of Sino-Soviet split) that helped Vietnam.

It was reinforced in Vietnamese view that China is indeed the old foe (as you seem to know the history of why), that cannot be trusted. Its not so easy to say past is past....Vietnam has been fighting the Chinese (as political distinct entities) a very long time...longer than anything found in subcontinent (esp given religious context on top here which they do not have as an equivalent over there).
