Solar power generation capacity of 4.8 GW is likely to be added this year in the country as installations are picking up, says a report. The report by Mercom Capital Group also said that power distribution companies continue to be a “drag” since they are showing reluctance to buy solar energy amid low electricity prices.
“India has 2.8 GW in solar installations year-to-date and cumulative installations have reached 8.1 GW as of August 2016,” it said in a release.
As per its forecast, about 4.8 GW of solar energy capacity is expected to be installed in 2016. According to the global clean energy communications and research firm, the solar project pipeline in India is now approximately 21 GW, with 14 GW under development and 7 GW scheduled to be auctioned. One GW (Giga Watt) is equal to 1,000 MW (Mega Watt). “Solar installations and its share of energy generation has picked up speed but distribution companies continue to be a drag on the sector and are showing reluctance to purchase solar in light of low power demand and cheap power availability on the exchanges,” Mercom Capital Group CEO and Co-Founder Raj Prabhu said.

If India can channel and regulate solar power generation she can be the largest beneficiary of solar power given her vast land and coastal areas and abundant sunlight during most part of the calendar year. We could even export power to neighboring friendly countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar and help strategic partners like Afghanistan, Iran and Maldives in solar power generation. The only thing needed is will and persistence.

India-led solar alliance to add 1,000GW of energy by 2030
Set to become a legal entity in December, the India-led International Solar Alliance (ISA) plans to add 1,000 gigawatt (GW) of solar power across the globe by 2030 with an investment of nearly 1,200 billion euros.

ISA's future plans were made public here in Bonn on the sidelines of the ongoing UN climate change conference (COP23).

India had earlier planned to disclose details of ISA's agenda next month during the alliance's first global summit in Delhi. The inaugural summit has, however, now been deferred due to postponement of French President Emmanuel Macron's India visit.

Macron was earlier expected to attend the summit on December 9 during his India visit. The mega meet is now expected to be scheduled early next year, depending on availability of Macron and PM Narendra Modi.

ISA is India's brainchild and is meant to bring 121 solar rich countries on a single platform to explore ways to utilise and promote solar energy.

The alliance was jointly launched by PM Modi and the then French President Francois Hollande in Paris on November 30, 2015. Since France had been quite active on this Indian initiative to forge a global coalition to harness solar energy, India is keen to have Macron on board at ISAs inaugural summit.

"We have had discussion on the issue here with the French government's special envoy for implementation of ISA, Segolene Royal. Fresh dates are being explored, keeping in mind the availability of PM Modi and President Macron.
The summit is likely to be held early next year," said Anand Kumar, secretary in the ministry of new and renewable energy, on Tuesday. Kumar said member countries had been proactively working on their solar goals and achieving the target of 1,000GW by 2030 would be a collective goal.

The current installed global capacity of solar power is around 303GW, including 12GW in India. Nearly 75GW of solar power was added globally in 2016. India had in 2015 revised its solar power target from 20 GW to 100 GW by 2022. So far, 44 countries have signed the ISA framework agreement.

India scores victory in climate talks, China announces plan to join International Solar Alliance
India scored a significant victory at the UN-sponsored climate talks here as China has announced that it has plans to join the Indian initiative -- International Solar Alliance.

China's decision to join the sunshine alliance is significant. As the biggest manufacturer in the renewable energy segment, China's participation could help address demand at affordable costs more rapidly.

Speaking at an event hosted in the India Pavillion at the summit, leader of the Chinese delegation to the talks Xie Zhenhua lauded India for its leadership and initiative in getting the International Solar Alliance underway.

Sources said that Xie Zhenhua was not among those slated to speak at the programme on the renewable energy market in India. The Chinese leader, it would seem, had stopped by to see the India Pavillion and its programmes. "He is a senior leader in the climate process so when he came in he was invited to speak," said a delegate participating the programme.

China is among the 121 countries identified by India to be included in the International Solar Alliance (ISA). Though approached to join the alliance ahead of the 2015 climate summit in Paris, China had not responded to the invitation to join the sunshine alliance nor had it made any comment about it. Beijing has maintained studied silence on the Indian initative over the past two yars.

Beijing's public statement that it would join the alliance makes clear the huge opportunities that the Indian initiative presents. The key aim of ISA is to ensure access to energy that is clean, affordable, and accessible. The bulk of the countries included in the ISA—between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn—are countries that poor, have huge development deficits, and unmet energy demands.

ISA proposes to provide solar energy solution given these are countries with large number of days, up to 300 days, of bright sunshine at a cost that is affordable. The plan is to drive down cost by aggregating the demand across countries. This presents a big opportunity for businesses and innovation.

With the ISA becoming a UN-treaty body on December 6, the promise of the alliance has edged an inch closer to becoming a reality. Observers said that China's decision to join the alliance at this juncture should be seen in the context of its efforts to corner the solar energy market. For Indian industry, it is a wake up call. It now needs to step up with credible affordable solutions. Or else it may find unable to take advantage of the aggregation of opportunity that will take place through ISA.

China has expressed its intention of joining the Alliance even though India officially declined endorsing and participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. This is part of Beijing's strategy of being diverse groups of initatives. It allows China to make the most of emerging opportunities and to shape the efforts and activities of these groups in a manner that either supplements or furthers Beijing interests.

China's announcement that it proposes to join the ISA is a diplomatic gain for India given the recent history between the two countries. However, it is also a clear signal that is India is to play a leadership role at the global it will need to be more strategic.

Sany is doing it.

China’s Sany Plans 1 GW Renewable Energy Capacity In India

Chinese industrial group Sany has announced plans to set up large-scale wind and solar power projects in India.

According to media reports, the group has signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government of Gujarat to set up 1 GW of wind and solar power capacity between 2017 and 2022. In addition to power projects the company shall also set up manufacturing facilities for wind energy equipment.

The total investment planned by Sany in the state’s clean energy and infrastructure development is $2 billion.

The group had announced similar plans last year following discussions with the Indian Prime Ministry Narendra Modi. At that time Sany had expressed plans to set up 2 GW renewable energy capacity in the states of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh at a total investment of $3 billion.

Several Chinese companies have announced partnerships with Indian companies. In July 2015, Zhenfa New Energy Science and Technology signed an agreement with Rolta Power to set up 2 GW of solar power projects by 2020, with a total investment of $2.03 billion. JA Solar entered an agreement with Essel Group to set up 1 GW manufacturing facility for solar cells and modules, while Hareon Solar announced partnership with ReNew Power to invest in and supply solar modules.
