NEW DELHI: Noting that the South China Sea was witnessing "competing claims", India today strongly pitched for co-operation instead of competition in the seas and oceans at a trilateral meeting with Japan and South Korea.

Asserting that India, Japan and Republic of Korea depend heavily on the Sea Lanes of Communications (SLOCs) for their energy security which are also the mainstay for trade and connectivity, Sanjay Singh, Secretary (East) in Ministry of External Affairs, said "there is indeed a compelling case for us to cooperate on maritime security."

"India has a valued geostrategic location straddling the SLOCs. The Indian Ocean Rim is characterized by large Exclusive Economic Zones and unexplored and untapped marine resources. Similar potential exists for example in the South China Sea which today is witnessing competing claims.

"Our common objective is to see that the seas and oceans become regions of co-operation instead of competition particularly as our energy security and trade depends on them. The primacy of our efforts must be to maintain maritime trade, energy and economic security in the seas around us. There is indeed a compelling case for us to cooperate on maritime security," he said while inaugurating the India-Japan-ROK Trilateral Dialogue.

Singh said as "leading" democracies of the world, the shared values provide them similar perspectives and perceptions of the fast evolving regional and global environment.

"Similarly, our strategic interests also coincide. We seek a peaceful and secure Asia free from the threats of terrorism, proliferation, piracy and conflict between states. There is common commitment to maintaining freedom of the seas, combating terrorism and promoting inclusive economic growth," he said.

The trilateral was attended by Akitaka Saiki, Ambassador of Japan and Kim Joong-Keun, Ambassador of Republic of Korea among other senior officials and diplomats.

The trilateral assumes significance in the backdrop of increasing Chinese influence in the South Sea and changing security architecture in East Asia.

There is indeed a compelling case for us to cooperate on maritime security, Singh said.

"From a nuclear security perspective as well, there can be significant cooperation amongst us as not only we need to deal with the conventional risks associated with nuclear power but also confront the risks of nuclear and missile proliferation in our neighbourhoods," the Secretary said while noting that "deepening cooperation amongst our defence and security establishments will promote our mutual security".

Yes, the countries should concern fully freedom of navigation in the SCS before its too late. They should not let China monopolize SCS by bullying small countries in ASEAN as VN and PH...
We are standing up to defend our EEZ, but the protection of the general freedom of navigation is the task of many countries, including the three countries India, SKorea and Japan.

Freedom of Navigation! It is a plausible excuse, in these world, is there real freedom of Navigation? any strategic point are controlled by contain countries, especially USA and its allies!!
No surprised that many countries want containt china, they use each other, yes, they have common objective this moment-containting china, I do know chinese and government know these, If china really be surprised by these, chinese have been surprise more than million times.
Now, wholely, World is in peace, but the rule of jungle not change.
For chinese and government, we just work hard, develop our economy and military, especially I hope the defence expenditure can increase some, but can't like SU, around China, many countries want to harass china, only USA have the power to do action, now they are doing it. But these clown are disgusting, especially some little conceited country, viet, phillippine!!
We must have the power that can control the strategic SCS, at the time of war, we can control it, in peace, the world have freedom of navigation. Any strategic point is these, is it?

S.Korea and Japan certainly wants to protect the sea lanes since that's where most of their trade come from.

Goodness knows what would happen if Vietnam or Philippines with their skewed understanding of EEZ being extended 2000 km from their coasts as absolute national territory as local as their capital city start making the trading ships require clearance from their governments for passage, or worse, paying for transit.

Our immediate action should be to arm our Vietnam and PH brothers with PJ-10 so that they can save themselves from any Naval attack .

haha, what can a weak country like you can do?both your naval and airforce chief commanders admitted that you are not any where close to match up China.

Indians just talk big,but what they really did is just pulling out of South China Sea oily exploration partnership with Vietnam when China said"no",what a nice kid.

so why worried? ;)

who's worried, you got together to discuss that issue and claim we are worried?what's the logic there?

Yes, that's the route is very very important for Japan, South Korea. Especially the US has said that she has national interests in ensuring maritime security in the SCS where each year about 1.2 tri USD value of U.S goods shipped through there.
That's why she is requesting more frequent access to Subic Bay and Cam Ranh Bay.

Next time dont whine when we increase our defence budget. ;) Afterall we are a weak country and our Naval and ACM have admitted. :P

But we can give a good kiss to Dragon :haha: , even your govt wants good relations with India and requested us to stand on border issue . What can i say ? Vietnam , a very weak country defeated you after 1970's too . Just think what a weak country can do to you . Being a rising economy you should be in control , else all your work will become ash .

Actually if we go by History, the weaker country has defeated the stronger one ( economic terms ).

In '62 China defeated India when it's GDP was less than India. In '79 they got to know shame from vietnam when the latter's economy didn't even take off.. China with lesser economy defeated US in Korea war.. etc etc..
