US, India and Japan to meet, discuss China

Shishir Gupta , Hindustan Times
New Delhi, December 05, 2011

US President Barack Obama and Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono attend the gala dinner during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and East Asia Summit in Nusa Dua on Indonesia's resort island of Bali.
In the backdrop of China's increasing assertiveness, Washington will for the first time host a trilateral official-level dialogue with Japanese, Indian and US diplomats on December 19 to build convergence over regional maritime security and non-proliferation in East Asia and Pacific

region.
The dialogue earlier scheduled for October 8 in Tokyo was postponed on a US request.
Government sources said top Indian officials fromthe disarmament and non-proliferation, East Asiaand America divisions of the ministry of external affairs will interact with their US counterparts such as assistant secretary (South Asia) Robert Blake and assistant secretary (East Asia and Pacific Affairs) and their equivalents from Japan'sforeign ministry.
The dialogue will ramp up to Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's visit to India on December 28.
While major bilateral initiatives like an agriculture corridor and trans-Asian Buddhist circuit are in the pipeline during Noda's visit, NewDelhi and Tokyo will for the first time explore thepossibility of joint research in the defence sector.
Driven by Tokyo and finalised during then foreignsecretary Nirupama Rao's visit to Japan in April 2010, the dialogue is also part of New Delhi's effort to go beyond the stated Look East policy and engage North Asia as well.
US President Barack Obama and recently secretary of state Hillary Clinton had talked aboutthe need for India to reach out to East Asia.
While Japan is a treaty ally of the US, India is being approached by South-East Asian countries and even Australia for trilateral initiatives in the face of Beijing's claims over the oil-rich South China Sea at the East Asia Summit in Bali last month.
New Delhi on its part plans to calibrate this trilateral initiative in a way that it is not seen as aplatform against China.
However, the regional strategic environment andChinese moves in the area will be part of the discussions.

. .
India should go for a trilateral security pact with Japan and US and another multilateral with Vietnam and some other ASEAN countries. Its important for future common goal by the military of the countries and intelligence sharing. If our enemies sharing everything against us, it will be a big mistake for not having a security pact. And we must keep Australia out of this. Good to se India rejected one with them.

.
Why keep Australia out when they do want to be an active party?

Because they still have some 19th century mindset and though they allowed US having a base, they are closer to China than anyone else in the region. In a future conflict or cold war with China will not benefit having Aussies on our side. Australia is changing but needs more time.

US does not like Vietnam. If india wants to side with US and Japan, it will have to ditch Vietnam for Philippines instead. Remember, one of them calls the South China Sea the "East Sea" the other one calls it the "West Philippines Sea." Australia is meant to contain india as well. indian navy can forget about any kind of power projection in the indian Ocean if india wants to align with USA. US Navy would never allow indian navy an inch. If india wants to be really tight with Japan, india will have to support Japan's claim over the Southern Kurils against Russia, your chief arms supplier.

I think india will align itself with Vietnam to avoid the conflicts of interest with USA and Japan (over Philippines, indian Ocean and Russia), while still being hostile to China. So there will be two anti-China camps -- USA + Japan and india + Vietnam. China will probably deal decisively with Vietnam first, then india and then finally USA + Japan.

.
I personally still think India should not join any camp and keep steady its non-alignment.

It is working with different countries on bilateral levels and that is best for India.

@sinochallenger - good dreams of china taking all nations one by one.
