India, Israel discuss defence deals

well isn't the cost of missile 40k, that's a huge amount for an interceptor
Thats very very low for an interceptor. Plus artillery radar calculates the point of impact and then u chose whether to intercept or not.

The costliest part of Iron Dome is artillery radar - very useful thing in any war.

Only for stationary targets like military bases, or cities. For Israel that makes sense (maybe more cost effective CRAM guns would be as useful), but with a wide borderline as in Indias case it doesn't really.

Iron Dome battery runs $50 million, with each missile in the neighborhood of $40,000 to $100,000 (estimates vary, depending on range).

:o: u call 40k low, why don't u shift ur missile manufacturing factories to india we will do it in 2000$ for sure :enjoy:

Just give us long pending Barak-8 for which we have already paid significant amount.Our naval vessels are unsafe without it.

India already has such radars, to a nation like India Iron Dome has very limited utility- India has shown interest in David Sling however.

in wiki David's sling's unit price is given as 1 million $......... is it accurate ??

I've heard that too but I don't know what that price refers to, when you say "unit price" does that refer to the cost of the missile alone (doubtful ) or the launcher and fire control unit together?

@500 any thoughts?

Barak-8 is the join venture. Israel is responsible for the radar MF-STAR (which is already installed) and the seeker, India is responsible for the rest. I think delay is at Indian side:

1 million $ is per missile. PAC-3 which does the similar job costs 3.4 million $ per missile.

Irone dome has no importance for us and former Air Chief Browne confirmed that, but he also stated interest in David's Sling missiles, since we do have the requirement for long range interceptor missiles for cruise missiles for example. The problem however will be the US techs in it, which makes US approval necessary and we have seen several deals being in trouble because of that.

@sancho
Do we really need one (David Sling missiles) though? Pakistan is incapable of even starting a war let alone winning one. China, though aggressive, will hurt it's own superpower ambitions in any eventuality with India and China is wise enough to understand this. And if we're going to import the DS missiles, why should we not import every other technology that the West/Israel has that is currently out of our reach? Also, do we have a program to develop interceptor missiles for cruise missiles?

In short, yes we need credible air defences, be it against aircrafts or cruise missiles, because we face opponents with big air forces and a good arsenal of missiles, therefore David's Sling would be an important option.
And we can't buy everything that is developed somewhere, because not everything is on offer for us (mabye not even David's Sling).
