India needs to stop abusing females from deprived backgrounds altogether, then it can dream of college educations for them all.

Err....maybe by working like rest, becoming independent financially, in a better position both financially and mentally to take the most important decision of their lives. I m amazed how could someone (regardless of Indian or Pakistan or Bng) even oppose such decision.

And to your 2nd point. Poverty is the main source for their background to be deprived. How exactly doesn't one improve their background ? by working, by earning. How will one work or earn if they will be married off by the time they finish their school ? That's why this legislation is brought.

Sharia already provides guidance to Muslims on when to marry.

Why should Muslims follow some arbitrary age that Hindus come up with.

India does not recognize sharia law on the whole..in fact no country does. How ever some of them have incorporated in constitution of India, that gives Indian Muslims certain extra liberties, which is fine.

But that does not include minimum marriage age.

So if you don't want to end up in jail, don't marry your daughter when she is 12, or as soon she has had her first period...no matter what sharia says.

Try reading my post. In areas where male:female proportion is heavily skewed by female infanticide, men are more domineering over females (simple economics, there are fewer females hence demand for them is higher among the surplus males). This dominance translates to abuse according to the authors of these statistical papers.

I never once said I was against raising the marriage age, but I'm against it in India because India has a skewed gender ratio hence this move will exacerbate the problems females already face. India needs to address the root cause of the gender imbalance, which is Hindu culture.
