Nope, because Astra is a BVR missile, with different sets of requirements than Maitri has and if it's in good pace needs to be seen, from what I read only the MK2 version will be useful to replace older missiles and even that needs some time. We should not fall into the "indigenous" trap again, when the initial Maitri development has shown that we can't do it. If at all, I would try to use the Barak 8 development to downscale it if possible to meet the Maitri requirements, but no matter what, we need foreign help.

There are Armraam and python-derby based SAMs so far I knew, Specially Spyder system.

Why can't we make our own using Astra MK2? Afterall, DRDO is good in all their missile programmes. a possible outlay of 30,000 crore foreign reserve should be saved.

But IA and IN will still need it. Maitri is tipped as a tri-services missile. IN particularly needs it (Maitri PDMS) as a

Nobody said we couldn't use Astra for a SAM version, just that it isn't comparable to the Maitri SAM development / requirement. Maitri is meant to be a short range, highly agile SAM, so the base should be an agile missile like Python V, MICA, ASRAAM... And no DRDO is not good in their missile programs, NAG, Astra, sub launched balistic missiles, Nirbhay..., all not ready developed or with problems. Their original Maitri development was a failure, so that can't be counted as good either right? If we want to develop such a missile, we need foreign help (French or Israelis), if not simply get a licence production for Spyder SAM's, which should be the easiest and most cost-effective solution.

IAF was smart enough to not make them dependent on DRDO again and to choose a stop gap solution instead. When Maitri SAM is available, they surely will opt for it too, but they can wait and see now, while IA bet only on the co-development and is running low on air defence now. The funny thing is, that they opted against the Israelis in their consideration of the Maitri partner, but now evaluating the Spyder SAM in a stop gap procurement too. Another great example of the inefficiency in the IA and another reason why we have to stop giving these free passes for each of the forces in procurements. MoD simply have to take over for the sake of the country and combine deals if possible and should not wait till the forces get their acts and egos together.

They priority seems to be on Barak 8 for the medium range and for the bigger vessels also CIWS, the only force that has no answer at all is IA, that's why they are lacking behind the most in air defence.
