There should be in depth genetic tests done in Oman. I am sure the Science will show there is much historic Indian presence there among their own population. It is why the country is naturally very friendly to India, would you agree @Iggy ?

Breakneck speed?
Indians have already outnumbered the locals here.lol
It's but natural that the Indian govt has so much sway in matters.
Out of all the GCC countries Iran is closest to Oman, rest are either indifferent or beligerent towards it. That should be the reason why India has roped in Oman to develop logistics hub connecting Iran-Oman-India.

Historic link between Oman and Kerla is very very old. Most of the original Mapilla (as muslims were called then) of kearla were Arab traders who set up households in Kerala. 'Mapila" means Son-in-law :P ... most of them were from Yemen and Oman.

There is a grave of a Mallu king in Oman. The grave of Cherumal Perumal.

The trade links are more than 3000 years old. In fact most of the Ships for trade were made in Kerala till the recent past. Its what the world knows as 'dhow'.

They were Large ships, but the largest ships of the times were made by Europeans.

On a side note the ship that brought Vasco Da Gama to India was piloted by an Indian Malayali called Ibn Aziz who worked for the then king of Calicut called the Samudri. (Zamorin).

Most of the Omanis are friendly in nature and also the current Sultan studied in India. He was a student of our late President Dr.Shankar Dayal Sharma. So Sultan do have some soft corner for us..

During period when there was restrictions on Iran for export of its Crude Oil,i was in Oman and had a general discussion with an Omani Official, who was related to Oil Trade. As per him, there already existed a under sea pipeline between thwo countries, which allowed Iran to bypass the embargo and export oil, though in limited quantities.

We have almost 2 thousand years of trade relations with that Region, Indian traders settled as far as Socotra ( Yemen) and there were several colonies of Indian traders. (More in Periplus of Erythrean Sea)

Similarly, Arabs and East Africans settled in India and use our ports for trade and transit.

Even Romans have permanent colony in South India (Muziris) and their small military contingent posted here.

This is all recorded history.

Port of Duqm

With India jointly developing the Chabahar port in Iran in the vicinity, Oman is looking at developing a logistics hub connecting India-Iran-Oman as a key gateway to the Gulf and Central Asia. Given the good political relations between Iran and Oman, India is trying to establish a link between the Duqm and Chabahar ports to boost connectivity.

Oman offers Sohar Port to India too

As the Sultanate of Oman continues to focus on economic diversification beyond its traditional petrochemical base and strives to transform itself into a major industrial and logistics centre for the region, the Sohar Port and Freezone has come looking for investments to India. Moreover, with India jointly developing the Chabahar port in Iran in the vicinity, Oman is looking at developing a logistics hub connecting India-Iran-Oman as a key gateway to the Gulf and Central Asia.

Indian majors like the Jindal Group and L&T have a presence in the Sohar Port and Freezone apart from smaller Indian companies like the Cabrol group. In Gujarat talks were held with companies in sectors like polymers, pharmaceuticals, food processing and steel. The advantages of the Sohar Freezone includes 100 per cent foreign ownership, free repatriation of capital and profits, corporate tax holidays of up to 25 years, no personal income tax, no duty on imports and exports, no minimum capital investment, and a free trade agreement (FTA) with the US.

Seems that India now wants to have a port for exporting goods quickly over Arabia?

Since Pakistan is not cooperating for providing access, India had no other option than to open up new routes to Iran/Afghanistan/Central Asia by-passing Pakistan.

Pakistan will. But it will take some time..

There is a feasibility study going on for a natural gas pipe line from Iran to Oman by a Korean company. My opinion is that, we should be creating a pipeline in Indian which will link from our west coast in Gujarat to our East coast on-wards to Nepal, Bangladesh, Burma and then China.

This does two things, it provides our neighbours resources to generate power and provides China with an alternative route for oil and gas. It will be a win win for everybody. We improve our infrastructure with funds. Our neighbours get energy security guaranteed by us. And gives Chinese leadership with a reason to solve the border dispute in our favour. Not to mention we will make money in transit charges.
