NEW DELHI: India today discussed with Turkey the issue of its 39 hostages in war-torn Iraq as also increasing threat of Islamic Militant outfit ISIS in the region.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today held compressive talks with her Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu who told her that given the current situation, the information flow was very "restricted" and there was no concrete details on whereabouts of the Indian hostages.

This is the second meeting between the two Foreign Ministers during the course of the last two months. The External Affairs Minister had traveled to Turkey to meet her counterpart in January.

Turkey is a "source" for India to know about the whereabouts and the conditions of the hostages who were kidnapped from Musul town in Iraq by the Islamic militants in June last year.

Spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Syed Akbaruddin said the two leaders discussed ISIS threat as well as about the 39 Indians.

Both the leaders also discussed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Turkey in November to participate in the G20 meeting. Turkey and India have been working closely on efforts to ensure stability and peace in Afghanistan.

"The discussions focussed on the working out of a schedule of visits for the year, which would include Foreign Office Consultations as well as a full-fledged meeting of the two Foreign Ministers in India," the spokesperson said.

He said apart from bilateral issues, there was a discussion on various regional issues of common interest, including the current situation in West Asia, the evolving dynamics of the situation in Iraq, and matters related to terrorism.

All 39 Indians held hostage by ISIS in Iraq are safe: VK Singh | Zee News
Last Updated: Wednesday, July 22, 2015 - 20:08

New Delhi: All the 39 Indians held hostage in Mosul town of Iraq by ISIS militants over a year ago were "safe", Government said today quoting multiple third party sources and asserted that efforts were on to secure their release.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh said government was in "close and regular" contact with relevant Iraqi government authorities to obtain information on their whereabouts and safety.

"As per latest information from multiple third party sources, they are all safe. The government is making all efforts and taking all steps to secure their release," Singh said, replying to a question in Lok Sabha.

The minister said safety and security of the Indians remained a matter of foremost concern and preoccupation for the government.

Replying to a separate question, Singh said, "as per information received from Indian Embassy in Baghdad, 39 Indians are held under the captivity of Islamic state of Mosul."

He said a group of senior officials are stationed in Erbil in Kurdistan Autonomous Regions of Iraq to liason with government authorities and individuals to secure release of the Indians.

Singh said External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had personally spoken to her counterparts in the Gulf Cooperation Council as well as other friendly countries in the region to assist in locating the Indian nationals.

The Indian nationals were taken hostage by the ISIS on June 11 last year in northern Iraq's Mosul town.

Harjeet Masih (26), the lone Indian who escaped from the clutches of ISIS militants in Iraq, in May had claimed that all the 39 Indians had been "shot dead".

Everyone is dancing around the obvious. when they say discussing with Turkey, they mean negotiating with Isis as there is no difference between Isis and Turkey.

Indian missing in Iraq's Mosul for a year, claims family | Zee News

Kolkata: An Indian national, hailing from West Bengal and working as a labourer in Iraq's Mosul district, has been missing for the last one year, his family has claimed.

The family has been running from pillar to post to get Khokan Sikdar back from Iraq, but all efforts have proved futile as they have failed to establish any contact.

According to Sikdar's wife Namita, Khokhan got a job in a construction site through an employment agency in Iraq's Mosul in 2011.

"He got his job in 2011 and after that he went to Iraq to work in a construction site in Iraq's Mosul district. He was in regular touch till June, 2014. But after a few days he told us that they had been held captive by terror groups and since then there was no contact," Namita told PTI.

"We appeal to the state and the central government to look into the case as early as possible and bring back my husband. I will write to PM, CM and to the MEA to look into the case," Namita said.

Namita said that a few months back officials had come to his home and taken a photograph of her husband but after that there had been no progress.

Fate of two Bengal workers in IS custody not known - The Hindu

Updated: August 25, 2015 03:47 IST
More than a year has passed since Namita Sikdar, wife of Khokon Sikdar, and Dipali Tikadar, wife of Samar Tikadar, from Nadia in West Bengal last heard from their husbands who were reportedly abducted by Islamic State (IS) militants last June in Iraq. They have repeatedly contacted both the Centre and the State government to ensure the safe return of their husbands, who went to Iraq as workers, but in vain.

“I have not received any information from either the Centre or the State government. All I got was empty consolations,” Ms. Sikdar told The Hindu on Monday, fighting tears. Her husband, who worked as a carpenter at Mosul in northern Iraq, was the breadwinner of the family. Mr. Sikdar, who went to Iraq four years ago, is a resident of Ilsamari village in Nadia district.

“For now, we are surviving with the help of our relatives. But I do not know how long this will continue,” she said, voicing concern about her six-year-old son’s future. From State BJP leaders to the Ministry of External Affairs, no one has been of much help. “They could not even tell me whether he [Mr. Sikdar] is alive or not.”

The last communication she received from the Centre was about 15 days ago. “They sent me a letter containing the name of a website and said there would be some information about my husband there. But I could not find anything, said Ms. Sikdar.

Ms. Tikadar could not be contacted.

New York: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday confirmed that the 39 Indians, who have been taken as prisoners in Iraq, are still alive and said that the government would do the necessary to secure their release after gathering more information.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his meeting today with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas discussed about the condition of the Indians taken as prisoners in Iraq and Libya.
