India, China To Finance Construction of Rail Network Across Ethiopia

What is interesting to me is the fact that india and china are trying to take on the african challenge.....while trying to out do the other. I think the future is going to be a very interesting one for indians and chinese alike. I just hope we dont clash.....it will destroy us both.

The only race is the one to secure resources. If I look at the advantages provided by both countries China is good at building infrastructure at high speed and because it is government funded and well organized any private organisation trying to compete will not succeed easily, India on the other hand as mentioned by Stingroy is helping out with NGO project and investing in enterprises etc. On one had I would like to think both sides are helping Africa from different end of the spectrum to better themselves but on the other I think this is more of a resource/market grab. Unless we wean ourselves from oil and fossil type energy sources the race will not stop.

Thanks mate, actually what I really like to see is a documentary focusing on projects run by India companies in Africa. BBC has run a number on China companies in Africa and they run into a number of issues but typically solved the Chinese way. Will be interesting to see the issues the India companies run up against and how they solve it. I would think the problems are the same but I'll be more interested in the methodology used to engage and solve the issue.

India, China To Finance Construction of Rail Network Across Ethiopia .

China and Ethiopia be aware of world -renouned India-style Scam!

India has neither money nor skills for

even most of construction works in India itself, as the whole infrastructure in India is

not much better than something just out of Stone Age.

India is out of money and there is a BIG black hole in its domestic finance which forces

Inida begging World Bank , Asia Development Bank, major Chinese Banks and

private investors every year to finance its own infrastrucutures in India.

... yet India has money to "finance" that of Ethiopia ??

Something just doesn't add up !

stop the india bashing

india does have money, and is investing heavily (by normal standards, not chinese ones) in infrastructure. but these infrastructure projects take time. while it's true that india's infrastructure stinks now, it'll be better in 10 years.

how about instead of going off on an angry rant, just say [citation needed]

and here's the data

Sir, you and i both know chinese establishment has the money and infrastructure. My response was a knee jerk and i deeply regret such an outburst. I have a deep respect for the chinese history and culture, at the same time, my own country has a rich history, culture similiar to the chinese. We as a nation have been growing as china has. I cannot help but show outrage when someone comes out of the blue and maligns my nation and my people.

I am not an internet warrior and i hate arguing with people. But sometimes, things reach a breaking point.

There are people like this on both sides. Note that most people arguing like this are flying both their native flag and a foreign flag.

sorry, but you don't use WB WDI data to claim that India has fund.

If that were the case , so would be the UK, yet everyone konws that the UK 's

been stripped.

No matter Indian public or private money is pledged there in Ethiopia, can you see

that there's sth fishy there?

India does NOT have enough money for its own infras development!

How many times I need to say this, eh?

It's like to say that a family doesn't have rice to feed one of its chilren, yet it says that

it would provide extre rich to a neighbour?

Do you think, sometimes, I wonder?

India-China rivalry in Africa not zero sum game: Ethiopian PM

Addis Ababa, April 1 (IANS) Hailing the Indian model of inclusive development, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has made a vigorous pitch for greater Indian investment in infrastructure and education in Africa and ruled out competition between India and China in the resource-rich continent.

Alluding to robust diplomatic and political relations between India and Africa, Zenawi exhorted both sides to take this relationship to new heights.

"We need more private sector Indian investment in various fields, including in infrastructure and capacity building," Zenawi told a group of visiting Indian journalists in the Ethiopian capital ahead of the second India-Africa Forum summit his country will host in May.

"India has unique capacity in this field. The Indian private sector is used to working in an environment similar to that of Africa. They have the technology and resources," said Zenawi, who has been shepherding his country's destiny for nearly two decades.

"The key area of interest is going to be the Indian investment in infrastructure. The government of India is giving a significant amount of resources for the development of infrastructure in the African continent. They have given us (Ethiopia) $700 million in concessional loans," he said.:cheers:

"India could have used this money for its own people. But this is indicative of the quality of special relations between India and Africa," he said.

"We hope this type of solidarity continues to be expanded and developed in the days to come. We also hope the traditional role of India in the education sector will continue to be enhanced," the Ethiopian leader underlined.

Ruling out competition between India and China in Africa, Zenawi said at best there will be "sibling rivalry, but it won't be a zero sum game".

"Inevitably, you are bound to have sibling rivalry." But he stressed, it wouldn't be a zero sum game like the rivalry between the two superpowers during the Cold War eras.

"When the elephants fight, the price is paid for by the grass. If the resources of Africa are going to be developed, they will need the markets of both India and Africa," he said.

Underlining the unique features of India's engagement with Africa, Zenawi said unlike others India does not lecture and impose its views on Africa.:devil:

"It's not about lecturing. It's modest; it's based on being available to Africa. India is not trying to impose itself; it has played a very constructive role in Africa."
:agree:

India's bilateral trade with Africa is around $40 billion, which is much less than that of China's bilateral trade of $108 billion with the continent.

However, unlike the mammoth infrastructure projects China has invested in Africa, India has focused on capacity building, value-addition and human resource development, generating huge reservoirs of goodwill for India across the African continent.

Underscoring time-tested relations between India and Africa, home to over two billion people, Zenawi said: "There are some intangibles that India bring to the table that makes the relationship special. India has been supportive of Africa's decolonization and in addressing post-decolonisation challenges such as poverty eradication and development."

"In some ways we are the same, but we understand each other better. Since days of early independence there has been broad cooperation at various levels."

"India has taught to the world that democracy and poverty are not mutually incompatible," he stressed.
