Rubbishing doubts on the efficacy of the hydrogen bomb test in 1998, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar on Thursday said scientists have achieved success in building deterrence capability of up to 200 kiltons.

"Once again I would like to re-emphasise that the 1998 nuclear tests were fully successful. We had achieved all the objectives in toto. It has given us the capability to build deterrence based on both fission and thermonuclear weapon systems from modest to all the way upto 200 kilotons," he said addressing a press conference in Mumbai [ Images ].

Kakodkar, who was Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in 1998, termed as "unnecessary" the controversy over the Pokhran-II nuclear tests triggered after claims by a former DRDO scientist that the hydrogen bomb experiment was a failure.

R Chidambaram, Chairman of the AEC in 1998 and the current Principal Scientific Adviser to the Union Government, made a presentation on the results of the Pokhran-II nuclear tests.

Former DRDO scientist K Santhanam, who was the DRDO coordinator for the 1998 tests, had claimed that the thermonuclear test was much below expectation triggering a controversy.

Santhanam had also demanded an inquiry by an independent panel of experts into the test results.

actually this 200KT hydrogen bomb capability is already declare by chidambram at 1998 after pokhron II, not PC ,...

i don't why people make so much fuss about santharam claim...

it was told that total yield was 45KT and details was classified....

so if we take IMO 12-15 to fission device and 1kt for tactical one and rest of yield to hydrogen bomb which make it to about 30KT ..and santharam claiming 20 KT..

as i said details are classified ...so it can be 20 or 30 KT ....

but these are tests and on the basis of these test india get capability of 200KT hydrogen bomb .... which may be some scientist like santharam want to test...

200KT is not a big number when compare to MTs hydrogen bomb tested by US and russia..

but it is about 12-15 times powerfull than bomb of hiroshim and nagasaki...which is enough for credible detternce power...

and some people want to test this credibility...thats it..

i will not be surprised in the coming 8-10 years time-span will go for another and after that sign CTBT, not NPT;).....

. .
well the way i see it even if the 98 test only gave 20kt explosion, thats still 20 kts fat man level bomb and given time since then it would have improved
