NEW DELHI: Looking to increase its engagement with Latin America, the government is working to expand ties with Argentina in trade and energy. At a joint commission meeting with his Argentine counterpart Hector Timerman, foreign minister Salman Khurshid said the two countries are seeking a strategic partnership agreement.

"The joint commission meeting focused on several areas of bilateral relations including trade and economy, science and technology, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, market access issues, defence, energy and space. The two sides also exchanged views on regional developments and multilateral issues,'' Khurshid said, adding that there was complete "meeting of minds'' on all issues.

Timerman also announced that Boca Juniors, the famous Argentine football club, would visit India later in the year.

During the meeting, the two sides reiterated their interest to expand the scope of trade and investments which presently does not correspond to its full potential. The bilateral trade at $1.83 billion though fell short of trade target of $3 billion set up by two sides in October 2009 during the visit of the Argentine president.

"The joint commission meeting agreed to tackle trade barriers such as regulatory frameworks, market access issues, high tariffs, visa and work permits. The two sides agreed to expeditiously implement the decisions taken during the joint commission meeting today. Further, both sides decided to meet regularly on identified issues to find lasting solutions to our bilateral trade impediments. The two sides further reiterated their determination to strengthen ongoing cooperation in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, textiles, energy and mining with the understanding that intensified cooperation in these sectors is in our mutual interest,'' Khurshid said.

In order to strengthen people to people contacts, the joint commission agreed to promote exchanges and cooperation in culture, academia and tourism. "In order to nurture our cultural links, on our part, we would be setting up India Cultural Centre in Buenos Aires. For strengthening academic linkages, our two sides agreed to set up a 'Think Tank Forum','' Khurshid said. In 2014, India is also planning to organize 'Festival of India' in Argentina and will seek Argentine government's support.
