KPK: Kidnapping & extortion money 80% reduced
PESHAWAR: Talking extortion money and kidnapping for ransom, fortunately 80% reduced in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa especially in Peshawar as the Pakistan Security forces launched operation against militants in Tehsil Bara of Khyber Agency. However, thousands of residents of Bara were displaced from their homeland and thousands of people were stranded in their homes at Bara due to unannounced flight jet bombardment on them while thousands of children were deprived from their education.
Tariq Habib, an in charge of Counter Kidnapping Cell (CKC) of Police Department said, master minds of extortionists operates from tribal areas, while they have their associates belonged to local criminals group who collect money from the high profile people. The police department traced out their associates from Peshawar and arrest them, the arrested extortionists were local criminals. The master minds of these local criminals operate from Bara and KP Police were not able to pursue them in tribal area, he added.
DSP Tariq Habib added, in order to arrest the master mind of extortionists police department several time wrote letter to Political Agent, Core Commander and Inspector General Frontier Constabulary but the get no response from them.
At the other hand federal government has also not responded to any letter sent by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government seeking help in bringing an end to the increasing number of extortion and kidnapping cases as almost all the extortion calls are being made from the tribal areas or across the border in Afghanistan and police have no authority to go after the extortionists there, the KP Police had sought help from the Interior Ministry through a letter several months back. That letter asked the Interior Ministry to set up a task force for joint action in the tribal areas against the hideouts from where the extortion gangs were operating, however Neither the Interior Ministry not any other department of the federal government ever responded to the letter.
However, at the other hand DSP Tariq Habib claimed that after launching military operation in tribal area the cases of extortion and kidnapping reduced. 173 cases of extortion were reported from January 2014 to November 2014 and 80% cases were traced out and 86 associates of extortionists in Peshawar were arrested so far.
While 74 cases of kidnapping were registered in last few months, and 80% cases were solved and kidnappers were apprehended due to not access to tribal area some abductees were still in the custody of kidnappers in Khyber Agency.
Tariq Habib claimed that many militants groups were identified after the establishment of CKC.
It is mentioned that at the one hand kidnapping and extortion has decreased in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to on going military operation in Bara but at the other hand many tribesmen, including children were suffered from the operation.
