I agree investing in gunships is expensives, pretty sure it costs thousands worth of fuel just keeping it up in the air for an hour and all that armament, but then again not sure how having nuclear weapons and investing billions each year in fancy toys helps either when 22 percent of your population is undernourished. Shows the priorities, NO?

The investments in Nuclear weapons are priceless. Without them Pakistan would be reduced to the same options against India, that Afghanistan has against Pakistan.

The other toys like f-16s, Mercedes of Generals: criminal waste of money.

Further Afghanistan has received 100 billion in direct aid for a country with a population of 30 million.

Tells a story about tribal Afghanistan. Afghan warlords too busy molesting Afghan children. Poverty and malnutritiin reaching record numbers.

There you go as you see it is all relative, you needed nuclear weapons against a superior enemy force, while now we need gunships at this moment to beat back proxies for which gunships are good deterrent. There is no armour, air superiority enemy ingressing from across the border, so these old russian and some new small american gunships will do.
So as you see my good friend, it's all relative :)

In the future if the threat level stays the same or increases, deterrence will increase too, with 16000 students currently studying in India and some doing nuclear studies, down the line a decade or two who knows we will even have nuclear weapons to deter the neighbour!

Of course ideal situation would be that countries get out of this stupid rat race, but hey we are not the ones keeping it going, those who have these grand claims of being regional and international powers should show some leadership and opt for pivot, but until then more children will go malnutritioned sadly.

Not sure if Pakistan is doing any better 22 percent of the population be undernourished. What is the 22 percent of 180 mil, you must good with numbers, you do the math.

Lets see the poverty figures :

World bank 2015 at $ 1.90 spend per day

Pakistan = 6.1 % of population
India = 12 %
Bangladesh = 21 %
Afghanistan = NA ( But I guess its a huge number )

Multi dimensional poverty by UNDP

Pakistan = 39 % of Population
India = 56 %
Afghanistan 66 %

http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.STA.ACSN

Population access by improved sanitation

Pakistan = 64 %
Bangladesh = 61 %
India = 40 %
Afghanistan 32 %

If I were a poor in south asia i would prefer Pakistan as thats where the least extreme poverty is .

Actually no -- nuclear weapons are considered in a sparest category -- President Eisenhower set that precedent. Nuclear weapons are civilization ending devices -- the rules and norms that apply to them are completely separate. That is why nations go to war to prevent other nations for acquiring even a rudimentary weapon.

The Taliban do not have air power -- why does the ANSF which is trained by the most powerful army in the world: the US Army need gunships?

Remember Osirak? -- plus how many Afghan students are in the IITs: 5?

of course you are: you have constantly threatened Pakistan -- it has always been so.

Further you can look @ Israel -- what it proposes for a future Palestinian state.

The comparison of Afghanistan/Pakistan is similar in many ways to Palestine/Israel.

You are missing the point here, I am not defending Afghanistan, but our good friend Pakistani342 mentioned the folly of gunships and I wanted to draw him a bigger picture on why gunships now.

Anyways Pakistani indicators are also fucked up, even by your estimates.

So you are saying that the mighty nuclear armed Pakistan is threatened by Afghanistan ? :)

Pakistan is f%$^&ed up -- Afghanistan is royally f%$^&ed up

Pakistan and Afghanistan are in a fight to the ground -- the stronger party always wins -- incase you read your game theory.

Of course -- just as Israel is threatened by Palestine

But Afghanistan will not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons as Syria and Iraq have not been allowed by Israel.

Build nuclear weapons requires deep infrastructure -- Afghanistan cannot manage that in 50 years if it was at peace today.

Are you sure about that? I am not an expert in the field of nuclear weapons :D

Well nuclear weapons, strategy, and to a degree Physics I've studied about as much as I've studied Afghanistan. And yes, building nuclear weapons is the poor man's moonshot.

Afghanistan does not have a tradition of science. For example Indians, Pakistanis Iranians study Physics, Chemistry -- Afghans are just not represented: something in the culture but Afghans are missing from Physics and Mathematics.

If you want a window into how Pakistan built Nuclear weapons read:
Eating Grass: The Making of the Pakistani Bomb

Afghanistan today does not have a singe theoretical physicist of the level of the team of people on the Pakistani side who started working on it in the 60s. And mind you Pakistan still in 2016 (nor India) have MAD capability. It will be full decade before Pakistan and India can play the big game.

This is interesting discussion, we will need to continue this.
One thing though like any know-how if you pay the right price, you don't need to be an expert, you buy the experts.

no that is simply not true. simply not true.

The Iranians are heavy weights in Physics -- I'd rank them above the Indians and even Turks but they have not been able to develop a nuclear device.

Nuclear weapons require the confluence of so many things ...

Thats certainly better than all the countries in south asia. We have one of the fastest growing middle class adults by wealth in the world .

Before you go make F -16 's I would suggest to start with small time weapons;)

If am not wrong we are the only ones to have tactical nukes?

:) You got the answer for reason for 22% from your own comment now you should take clue and stop defending buying of fancy toys by comparison with Pakistan.
