Imran orders restoration of previous naan, roti prices

This is going to sound really dumb, but isn't it cheaper to make roti at home? Or do people not have access to gas or enough money to buy Atta?

People in Pakistan do make roti at home but a lot of times they just buy it from a local shop, which are available in every neighborhood. By lowering the price of wheat, roti (and nan) prices will go down.

Roti / nan shops in Pakistan are very low cost and very convenient. They have a large oven, and nan rotis get made very fast and very economically.

miss makai ki roti and those special thick nans... Don't know of another country that has this kind of very common bread making setup, maybe Iran and Afghanistan and central asia.

A day after Prime Minister Imran Khan ordered to bring down prices of naan and roti to their previous rates throughout the country, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on Wednesday reverted the gas tariff for non-commercial tandoors to the pre-June 30 level.

Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Hafeez Shaikh chaired the meeting and approved measures to bring down the prices. The decision was taken on a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Energy to revise gas prices for roti tandoors.

The ECC will provide Rs1.51 billion to subsidise such gas connections.

The committee directed provincial governments to restore the rates of naan and roti to the pre-June 30 level and warned provincial governments that the federal government will withdraw the subsidy if the prices are not restored.

As per the decision, a detailed survey of tandoors across the country will be carried out in order to ensure that the benefit of revision in gas tariff is made applicable to stand-alone tandoors or roadside restaurants catering to the poor and no undue benefit is passed on to the tandoorsin hotels or larger restaurants which are to be treated as commercial gas connections.

The ECC also reviewed a report on the price of wheat. According to the report, the price has been reduced by Rs50-60 per 40kg after a ban on its export.

It was also decided in the meeting that a session of the National Price Monitoring Committee (NPMC) will be convened on August 8.

The committee also decided to impose an additional duty of 10 per cent on the import of cotton.

Meanwhile, the federal government also reconstituted the ECC to include Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Division Hammad Azhar in it. The federal cabinet had already approved his appointment as a member of the ECC on July 25.

With the latest inclusion, the strength of the committee has become 15.

Micromanagement at its finest. It would be interesting to see how the government manages the actual implementation of this decision.

Do compare USD rates,GDP & PPP.
I could not be bothered to do the maths so I just went by the comparison made by the paper. I will ask @Nilgiri kindly to do the maths on gas/petrol for India/Pakistan but my feeling is both are way cheaper then regional rates.Even with recent increases they still might be cheaper.

I would ask @Nilgiri again to please do the tedious maths and settle this debate.

when prices of everything goes up the naan and roti sellers also have the right to raise the price of their product. is IK going to give them some special allowance for keeping the price of roti down? IK is failing on economic front miserably. only the patwari type pti supporters still support him for this failure.

So for bringing the price of roti down the resident Noora supports are blaming PTI now. Logic never helps such people it seems.

@Nilgiri. Mate, can you please give us comparative rates of petrol and gas in dollar for india/Pakistan. Thanks.

Petrol (29th july 2019):

https://www.globalpetrolprices.com/gasoline_prices/

IND = 1.09 USD/L
PAK = 0.70 USD/L

=======

Natural Gas prices (for lowest consumption band - most recent available):

Pakistan - 121 Rs per MMBTU = 0.76 USD/MMBTU (next band above this is around 1.88 USD....so I dunno where the average for a typical private end-consumer would be - it depends on consumption)

http://www.ogra.org.pk/consumer-gas-prices

India pricing starts around 2.24 USD/MMBTU for natural gas.

That is precisely one of the problems highlighted by the IMF: fuel prices are subsidized to be too low and do not recover the costs involved.

PTI Government has devalued the Pakistani currency to junk but they want the sellers to somehow sell roti / naan at the old prices?

King of the Bani Gala Palace is clueless of the damage his naive party has caused to the Pakistani economy.
His party or the ppp and pmln

Yup SUBSIDISED if real price is charged the locals start crying Coz they have no idea what the real price is

That is the result of decades of adverse conditioning where the people do not realize the value of the resources they waste so callously because they are insulated from the real price. Witness the leaking taps that waste water and old porous rubber pipes that leak gas.

Spot on! Taken for granted

And the icing on the cake is when IMF is blamed for being the evil one that is actually asking for the correct thing to be done here by removal of fuel subsidies. :D
