Imran hints at launching campaign against ECP

ISLAMABAD: Imran Khan on Monday dropped strong hints of launching a fresh agitation this year, but against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and not against the government.

“We may take to the streets again, but this time against the ECP because it has failed to bring about reforms in election laws in line with the findings of the Supreme Court’s inquiry commission in the rigging case,” the Tehreek-i-Insaf chief said during a get-together with members of the Supreme Court Press Association at his palatial residence in Banigala.

Naeemul Haq, the PTI’s information secretary, and spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry were also present.

Mr Khan recalled that the Supreme Court had come out with 40 findings in its verdict on alleged rigging in the 2013 general election, but the ECP was “sitting idle” instead of amending laws before the 2018 elections.

On the basis of the findings suggested by the three-man judicial commission, PTI had developed a charter of demands that it would submit to the ECP to learn what it had done in this regard.

Imran Khan, however, clarified that his party would accept the judgment of the Supreme Court on Panama Papers case.

He appreciated the professionalism of the five-judge Supreme Court bench which heard the case, adding they were more prepared than the party’s counsel and put pertinent questions during the proceedings.

In reply to a question about entering into fresh alliances before the general election, Imran Khan said the party would be “very careful this time” in awarding tickets for the election.

Explaining why PTI chose to knock at the gates of the Supreme Court by filing the case over the Panama Papers, the PTI chief said the leaks had helped expose the Sharif family.

“To attack the menace of corruption, it is necessary to expose Sharifs,” he said.

On the trial of terror suspects by military courts, Khan said had his party opposed the government’s move to set up military courts, a message would have gone out that PTI was opposing the fight against terrorism.

Mr Khan admitted that his preoccupation with the sit-in in 2014 and later with the Panama case had not allowed him to concentrate on matters of governance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Although he was confident that PTI would again form the provincial government in KP after the next elections, Imran Khan conceded that corruption existed in the province “at the lowest level”.

“My preoccupation with the sit-in also diverted my attention from Karachi. We were unable to cash in on the disarray in MQM ranks after August last year.”

Claiming that Karachi was the “PTI’s city”, Mr Khan said the people of the country’s biggest metropolis were more mature politically than other cities of the country, recalling that major movements always used to originate from this city in the past.

“Before the next elections I am going to focus my attention and energy on Karachi in order to take advantage of the political situation there,” he said.

About the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final, Imran Khan said he did not watch the game, but added that he felt the entire tournament should have been held in Pakistan instead of the UAE.

“I have been talking for the past 40 years about developing regional competitions to strengthen cricket in the country,” he said, recalling his opposition to participation of departmental teams in major national tournaments.

However, he was unsparing in his remarks about PSL chairman Najam Sethi, accusing him of damaging cricket by holding the closing ceremony of PSL under the shadow of 30,000 security personnel and by “clamping a curfew-like situation”.

“They organised the final in Lahore only to distract the nation’s attention from the Panama Papers saga,” he observed.

“Had any untoward incident occurred, cricket would have been buried in the country for all times to come.”

If only ECP had shown this much efficiency in discussing the money looting of Sharifs and Bhuttos.

This !!! I think was the SINGLE area where he should have put most of his energies in

I hope it's not too late for the 2018 elections now, but if he manages to bring about reforms this will benefit generations to come

.
Oh god; which city is he going to thrash, loot, vandalize and 'shutdown' (by forcing local shop-owners) - this time?

.
Even IK's failed campaigns are better than rundi ki ulaad Sharif's successful campaign. Bunda gandu ho leken Sharif jaisa gand patthi ka na ho.

I agree... never said i was from the flip side... i actually like PTI... just hoped they were more "mature".

Sorry... i don't to that whole personality worship thing...

ECP nothing to do with money laundering, they are hearing the case of Mis use of Party Fund, and if PTI and IK are so clean, then should pursue the case, and bring that case to logical end, and win Morally.

.
There are two main reforms which were need strong opposition and agitations till reforms done and implement for sake of people.
ECP and NAB and unfortunately both neglected by Khan, it's too late now before next elections to focus. Bohat dair kar di mehrban ate ate.

Yes i agree, PTI should come clean and show the sources of its party funds and also where/how they are being used. But shouldn't the same question be asked from all the other Parties.

All parties take funds from outside even NS used Qatri Heli for election 2013.

Foreign funding case filed by former founding member Akbar S Babar. Plus there's also a case on the matter of Bani Gala where Imran first declared it as a gift, then as a consideration from Ex-wife against London Flat

Well Imran Khan can certainly take out the obvious evidence (As you put it) and get NS disqualified via this much simpler route.

Imran Khan and the Election Commission

Flaws can be removed through legislation rather than agitation

For three years Imran Khan used legal ploys to stop the Election Commission from hearing a petition accusing PTI of gross financial irregularities. Failing in that, he has called into question the integrity of the Commission. On Monday, Khan dropped hints of launching an agitation against the ECP. He accused the Commission of failing to bring about reforms in election laws in line with the findings of the Supreme Court’s inquiry commission in the rigging case. This is a funny accusation as bringing about reforms in the election laws comes under the purview of Parliament and not the ECP. It is a matter of concern that the leader of the third largest party in Parliament is unable to draw a distinction between the powers of the Parliament and the ECP.

There is a perception that Imran Khan is keen to keep the government under attack throughout the period leading to the 2018 elections. The best way to do this was to expose the PML-N administration’s performance in the National Assembly. However lacking the required parliamentary skills that include the ability to argue a case persuasively, a quick mind and a gift of gab, Imran Khan is reluctant to face his superiors in the art of the possible.. Parliamentary politics requires a flexibility, a willingness to bargain and a desire to make bridges which Imran Khan singularly lacks. This explains why he has generally avoided the National Assembly sittings.

Imran Khan prefers instead public gatherings of devotees who are willing to follow whatever quixotic calls he issues without questioning. This might be exhilarating for the PTI leader but this has failed to fetch him votes. The march on Islamabad, the prolonged sit-in and the closure of cities followed by several mega gatherings have failed to translate into higher ratings. Imran lost several bye elections in Punjab and Karachi while he could not improve his position in Sindh and Balochistan. The campaign against the ECP is going to be as fruitless as his earlier attacks on the windmills.

then PTI should file petition against that too, and take that case to logical end as well, like Panama Papers, who stopped them to do so.

yes, and if someone not giving answer, then PTI should file petition against that party as well.

But problem is, no party filed Petition against PTI, founder Member of PTI filled petition against PTI, which is the basic difference.
