What's new

I'm looking for a dog!

Mate, you need to keep two dogs. A doberman (easy to train and they don't respect or obey anyone other than the owner) to roam outside at night and a small dog inside the house to make noise if anything is out of order. (maybe a boxer or a terrier).

What you need to do is explain if you're facing any threat to your life? If that's the case, you need to carry a sidearm and an automatic rifle as well (if you can), if not get a police guard assigned to yourself.

I am not looking for an obedient dog, I just want that when I go to sleep at night, I can unchain him and he would atleast alert me if somebody tries to break in. My house has a lot of agricultural land on the back side and the only think separating them is an 8 foot wall.

Also note, that I have enough space outside my house and he can be taken to a walk or roam freely by himself.

Bro I don't know the prices in Pakistan, but here anywhere between 60K to a lac for a good GSD. Good means with proper certificates, hip dysplasia ruled out, not necessarily show quality/ribbon winner parent (those go into more than a few lacs), and all the basic shots given up to 3 months.

You can get 40K ones also, but I would be very careful with GSDs because they are so badly and rampantly bred by the cage-class so called assembly line breeders. Forget breed points like stance, slope, carriage, snout, ears, etc.

I would honestly not be comfortable with a doberman around my kids.

Though in the end, how a dog turns out is all up to who his master is and how the household environment is. But still, certain breeds have certain characteristics.

A rott is a one man dog. You have to be his master. Chowkidar, chaprasi will not do. Again, not 100% safe with very small kids.

If kids are an issue, then the retriever variety is best. Goldies, labs etc. Best with kids.

Otherwise, rott, alsatian, belgian malinois are my pick.

Never a pit bull please. Though they can be actually very sweet. But the risk ....

thanks for your detailed reply.

Haha, I'm not facing any threats to my life. I just want to be safe from anyone breaking in. Thats it.

In that case..............keep a pair of dobermans or rottweilers for pure guard duty......... another suggestion would be go for a black german shepherd, as it has great temperament (I have a pair)........... and whatever you do, stay away from pitbulls.............

Doberman. Easiest in terms of what you are looking at with minimum interaction with your family.

How much a black GSD costs in Pak? Any idea?

Any dog will be a good watch dog if left out of the house. They stay awake and wander around at night and sleep by day. Mongrels (street variety) are excellent guard dogs. But their usefulness is to scare away the garden variety thieves who come into the compound for cycles, iron manhole covers, sandalwood trees, etc. Not the more hardcore variety.

For the hardcore variety, you need a hardcore dog. So yes, the GSDs, Dobermans, and Belgian Malinois are the preferred police/army dogs. The US army and NATO almost predominantly uses the Belgian Malinois in Afghanistan and other war zones.

Labs are great as sniffer dogs and for water rescue ops (great swimmers). Newfoundlands also are fantastic water rescue dogs.

But as a guard dog, labs are usually so mild, they'll roll over on their back and let the intruder tickle his balls. lol

If you are looking for a gaurd dog, check with some villagers who hunts with dogs as a time pass. We have three country dogs at our home, not any kind of special breed, we use them to hunt rabbits and gaurd our fields. Female dogs will be very active in gaurding and hunting than males. We don't have the habit of locking our house, but no one can come and take a pin. To suprise our dogs killed a cobra at a time when my mother was totally unaware of its presence.

Hi All,

I'm looking for a guard dog. Could you all suggest what is the best breed to guard my house?

Pls note I don't want a pet, nor am I interested in spending a lot of time with it. And ideally it should suffice with very less maintainance.

Pls suggest.

Great Pyrs are superb guard dogs, that's their historical usage, that's in their DNA. They aren't aggressive though, but they will let you know if something's amiss. Naturally alert, imposing, huge, often reaching around 200 lbs., these dogs excel as guards.

Guarding is a natural behavior for a Pyr:

It's what they do:

As noted, they were traditionally used to guard, more specifically to guard flocks, as a result they are independent and don't need human oversight. Feed them, give them water, and let them do their thing. Pyr's tolerate both warm and cold weather.

Don't get an NAID, they are cold weather dogs only and are a bit aloof... smart, but playful. They are naturally social and need companionship, solitude makes them anxious. They like people a bit too much to be good guards.
