Sometimes it's easy to forget that the Earth and everything on it are rotating. But it's a good thing that our planet keeps spinning, because if it suddenly stopped it would unleash a torrent of catastrophes.

Just listen to what Michael Stevens has to say in this new installment of his Vsauce YouTube series.

"First of all, you would gain weight," Stevens says, a reference to the fact the Earth's rotation slightly offsets the effect of gravity. "But that would be the least of your worries."

That's because you'd suddenly be facing winds as fast as those created by atomic bomb blasts and tsunamis kilometers high. And, says Stevens, your own body would instantly be turned into a sort of "supersonic tumbleweed."

Things would be especially bad near the equator, where the surface of the Earth rotates fastest. But if Earth stopped spinning, the whole planet would spin out of control.

For the full explanation, check out the video above.

Biggest Impact:
When earth rotates, water accumulates and buldges to the equator, when the rotation would stop the buldge would fall same level across all surface of the planet , and the average "Height of water level" would suddenly increase

The effects would be similar to sudden Tsunami across all continents where water would creep up and take up all coastal cites around the globe.

Effect on Weather on Planet Surface:
One side of planet would heat up and other half temperature would fall below zero and freeze up , life would not be able to sustain life on the heated area or cold areas over all a slow painful death

With that stated , its a scientific fact that earth's rotation slows ....and one day it will indeed stop spinning

So next time when you see the morning sun , rise in horizon be thankful to earth's rotation as it is one of the miracles that makes life possible on our planet which warms up the day as sun rises

interesting....

If Earth stopped spinning it would lose it's magnetic poles. Another situation would be one side facing the sun would experience permanent daylight and the other side away from the sun in permanent night.

isnt there a movie also made on this subject...? i just cant recall it at the moment

so our side would heat up more:( ...lucky canadians/russians etc

The Core was one big sci-fi film. The plot was for scientist and engineers to drill to the center of the Earth (impossible) and set off a nuclear explosion in the Earth's inner-core to help restart the rotation of the Earth.

will watch it today or coming days...thanks...

It would take billions of years for the Earth to stop rotating. Thank God Almighty I won't be there!! :D.

If fact millions of years before that happens, the Sun would have turned into a Red Giant and swallowed up the planets in near orbit like Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.

So guys, relax! Nothing to be worried about! We won't be here to see this happen!! ;)

All these things have a lesser likelihood of happening. Sun's expansion will take very long time. What really truly worries me is the chances of a massive Asteroid strike or a huge Gamma ray emission from the Sun or an advanced alien civilization finding us.

How do you know that an advanced alien civilization has not found us already? 8-)

There's plenty strange stuff going on out there which may not be of this Earth!

The rotational energy would be turned into heat which, according to wikipedia, is 2.138×10^29 J.

I don't know if that's enough heat to melt the crust but it would certainly make things a bit warm under the collar.
